I don't care if I had to go 50 miles out of my way to the doggone store. I don't eat at any chinese fast joints that you have to put your money through some bullet proof window either.
If they want to be so rude then that's their business, but they sure would get mine.

I used to work at Circuit City and we'd get a lot of dirty looking people in the store: truck drivers who looked like they hadn't bathed in days, farmers who looked like they'd hopped off the combine and came in the store, and strippers - we got A LOT of strippers from the local clubs.
These people would pull money from the most inappropriate place. The strippers always had their money in their cleavage. They'd pull out the cash and put it in your hand. It was sweaty and damp and funky-smelling.
The farmers' money usually had dirt and mud on it. The truck drivers' money smelled like liquor.
We'd handle so much cash and touch so many hands that there would be times when almost all of the cashiers were out sick w/a cold or some other illness.
It got to the point where we kept hand sanitizer behind the counter and we had to sanitize after each transaction.
All this to say that yes, it's rude when someone puts the money on the counter, but keep in mind that there may be a good reason for them not wanting constant bodily contact w/hundreds of people a day.Comment

Chances are that the store is a family business that hires family members to work the cash register and stock the shelves. In their eyes, they are business owners and you are serving them with your money. That's the mentality many asians have. They will smile and be very polite but deep down inside, they think of West Indians, Latinos, and African Americans as brown-skinned peasants who are dumb enough to pay the marked-up prices at their store.Originally posted by Nunya:

well, this gives a new slant to the phrase "it's a small world". All of my life I've heard my parents and grandparents talk about having their change put on the counter, rather than put in their outstretched hand ... heck, I've experienced it myself - as recently as last week from a teen-aged anglo in a fastfood drive-thru. I always thought this was a practice characteristic of the deep South US of A. I guess racism knows no boundaries.Comment
