I am not certain how the earth was created. I do understand scientific theory and i do think it is a useful way of explaining what goes on and what went one before.

I'm willing to accept the "big bang" theory.

Now as to whether God caused that bang or not, I am open at the moment.

I just don't understand why people reject the idea that the universe started from nothing in favor of the idea that a creator - that started from nothing - made it.

Somewhere, somehow, there must be a start..of the earth or of the creator.

I doubt we'll solve this puzzle for a LONG time, if ever.

There is a slight problem with your statement, first you have to understand something, that we don't have the capacity to understand what actually happened. To explain this, let's look at
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth

Okay, I have a question, what was the first thing He created??? WRONG! neither the heavens or the Earth, let's break the verse up into 4 smaller parts to understand this better:

In the Beginning, God Created, the heavens, and the Earth

Look at the very first part: "In the beginning", now ask yourself, the beginning of what? Time! God first created time, your question asks about the start, well, that is time related, since he existed before there was time, there's no way to answer the question that's within our limited understanding, I'll never understand what's outside of time, that's for sure.
