In other words, you can't answer the questions so you call them insults and say that questions aren't a form of interaction.

I do understand you're posting in good faith and want to share some of what you've found. However, questions are a perfectly valid contribution to a discussion. They can serve to further the understanding of both the questioner and the questioned. It's hard to judge intent in print. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

i used to know a young man, a jehovah's witness, who was very much like pilot.

came to find out that it was fear that made the young man fight any attempt rational discussions of his very set opinions about the world, opinions that were developed and taught by his faith. his faith gave him an answer to every troubling thing. that can be very comforting in a world of hard issues.

the feeling of authoritative knowledge based on the bible was also very empowering for this young man. he was proud of his biblical education, and felt it was superior to his secular education (which was not very much due to his family's poverty). his biblical views were beyond challenge in his eyes, because they were based on divine revelation. he was moved often to testify or preach to me. he welcomed disagreement with his views because, according to his religion, this was "persecution" and offered him an opportunity to show that he could hold steadfast to his biblical beliefs.

i eventually realized that his religion was too important to him for him to risk entertaining non-biblical interpretations of his views. so i stopped asking him questions, he stopped preaching to me and we learned to talk of other things.

funnily enough, that was when i started realizing that he still had insecurities attached to being young, and poor, and trying to find his way in the world (getting a good job, finding the right kind of woman - oh gosh he was painfully naive about that). his religion in fact, did not have all the immediate answers. but at that time in his life, it offered him a semblance of safety that he needed.

not that i'm saying this is the case with you, pilot.

it's very frustrating to try to get through to smug intellectuals.

how do people who move in the Spirit get through to people who move in the intellectual?

they don't...it's like trying to teach a pig to dance...it frustrates the teacher & annoys the pig.

That is his standard reaction to anyone who questions an iota of his writings. I basically cannot read his stuff unless it is annotated.

It is not that he cannot spell, write, or think, I just think he does not care at all.
That is unfortunate, because he is on a public board, (although I hear it is private).

His views and style are not unique though most ultra-religious persons seem to display this predilection to engage meaningless convos, that never answer the questions posed!

The really scary part of this is that Pilot was allegedly a part of the media (allbeit Radio WAVS...sorry Miami crew) and illustrates why the lay media should never be trusted.

What I find amazing is that my 'mass media' students have a lower standard of literacy than my regular majors. 'Pilot' is, alas, not exceptional.
