Dollybaby - just want to say how much I have enjoyed your trip reports - you are a wonderful writer. I just recently made the move to Jamaica after being in similar circumstances as you. The first driving experience for me was pure hell. I had never driven here and when I got the car in Kingston, I jumped in and drove all the way to Mobay in the dark right then and there. Talk about white knuckles. I can really relate to the conversations in the car too - at times I'd like to strangle the person that sits in my passenger seat!

So hurry with the next installment - we're all waiting patiently.

I"m a bit late,your story is pretty funny!You mean to tell me as soon as Paul starts to drive he get the darn thing in a accident? That really sucks!! I love Ocho Rios too,Negril is nice for the beach scene but Ochie is the best! Can"t wait until my trip in December! People on the street stop in their tracks and start oooohing and pointing. The driver of the other car gets out and so does Paul. I see the both of them arguing and pointing to the damage on both cars. The other car doesn’t have much damage, he ends up with a little knick on the corner.

Paul gets back in the car and looks at me for my reaction. I remain expressionless and decide not freak out at this moment although I really want to lash out at him for all his nagging about MY driving.

He starts to drive and we pull into the Jamaica Grande entranceway. Someone that Paul knows runs across the street, he wants to know what happened. It’s here that I get out of the car and take a look at the damage. The side of the car is caved in towards the front bumper and there is a big black streak from the front bumper to the rear door. This does not look good. Paul finishes talking to his friend and he starts driving to his place. He says “I don’t know why the car stopped like that”. I’m quiet and don’t say anything. “Don’t worry, I know somebody that can fix it for us”. I sure hope so.

We pass the familiar sights that I remember from the first few trips. I think Marilyn once said that it’s the first place you visit in Jamaica that you fall in love with and I believe that because it’s true for me. We head up the hill to his place and stop off at a house a little distance before reaching his pad. He calls on a man who comes out to examine the car. He tells us that it will cost $3000 JA to fix. I breathe a sigh of relief, that certainly sounds better than $2500 US (which is a heck of a lot more in Canadian money by the way). He tells us he will pick up the car in the morning and have it ready by noon.

We leave and head up the hill a little more to his place. I get out of the car and check out my surroundings. First thing I do is take a look over the hill to get a glimpse of the rainforest down below. It is so beautiful and I am amazed everytime I have a look. I go back to the car and look for my camera. Dang it! I forgot the camera, but I brought the camcorder so I take some videos instead. While I am taking pictures Paul brings his little boy outside for me to meet. He is so unbelievably cute, he’s got skin lighter than me and has green eyes. I play with him for awhile and I ask him where’s his mom. “She’s outback with my cousin, do you want to meet her”?

I suck back some air, and say “OK”. This should be interesting.
