I couldn’t bring myself to write yesterday as I was quite disheartened, to say the least, at what happened with Marilyn’s trip report. So it seems I’ve got my groove back today (oops bad choice of words on these here parts).
We walk around back and his cousin and baby’s mom are laying on the bed watching TV. Paul introduces me to both of them, his cousin says hi to me. I have talked to her on the phone before, it’s nice to put a face with a voice. Baby’s mom glances at me briefly and goes back to watching T.V. His cousin apologizes for not having anymore pillows for me to lie on but throws me a teddybear. So I grab the teddybear and lay back between the two of them. OK, this is very weird. I make small talk with his cousin and then turn to baby’s mom. “Do you live close to here”? I already know she lives closer to Kingston but I try to come up with something to talk about. Without looking at me she says “NO”. OOOOOK.
Paul comes back and packs up some more stuff he grabbed off the clothesline. He asks if I’m ready, I tell him yes and we leave. After packing up the car, he hands me the keys and tells me to drive. Now I don’t want to drive and don’t even know what came over me to want to drive. But, I take the keys and we leave.
I manage to get us in one piece to the Marineview hotel where we’ll stay the one night. Tonight we’re going to the reggae concert in St.Mary so we’re going to eat and rest up before we leave. We get the same room as last trip.
We park the car, unload the stuff and head down to Jack Ruby’s for dinner. I see Pete as soon as we walk up. He says “Back again hey? Have they not given you citizenship yet”? I laugh and we sit and eat with him. He asks me how Danielle is doing. I tell him she’s doing well. “When are you going to get her to come down with you”? I shrug my shoulders. “Why don’t you ask her”? “I HAVE”. He says emphatically. “I’m not as lucky as my friend here”. As he looks over at Paul.
We leave and head down James street towards Main. We pass some people that Paul stops and talks to, a few I remember meeting previously. We then head across the street to the supermarket to pick up some drinks for the room. Back at the room, we nap before heading out to Oracabessa in St.Mary to see the show.
Around 7:30 we awake, and get ready to leave. We head towards the car and we are stopped by someone Paul knows, they get in a conversation and it turns out he wants to come along with us. I let Devon drive since I’m not looking forward to driving in the dark for such a long ways after the incident this morning.
We make our way and I have to clutch my seat almost the entire way since Devon feels the need to pass anyone going faster than him on the road. We get there in about 30 minutes and make our way into the parking lot. The lot is huge and there are already about a hundred cars parked even though it is still early. We walk quite a distance to the venue, I hear the reggae music playing and it grows louder as we proceed through the entrance gate. The cost is $400 JA, I am surprised at how inexpensive it is compared to the ticket prices you would pay for events at home.
We enter a huge field with about 300-400 people already gathered on the grass. There is a large stage and someone I don’t recognize is singing. We part ways with Devon, Paul and I head towards the bar, grab some drinks and then make our way up the stairs which seems to be the rooftop of the bar. There are some stools placed up on the roof and we grab two and lean over the wall to watch.
Ninja Man comes out singing and the women in the crowd go nuts. When it’s his turn to leave he gets an outcry from the women and makes a comment back to them to the effect of ‘female anatomy being greedy’. That gets a response of laughter from the crowd.
I see Barrington Levy, Coco Tea, Warrior King, Luciano, Bush Man, Anthony Cruz and about 20 other artists that night.
We sway to the music and I sing along to the songs I know. I have to take a breath in when I take a look at everything around me. It’s a full moon tonight, the air is warm and I can smell the ocean from the distance as the venue is next to the water on James Bond Beach. I watch the flames from torches being fired into the sky, flames from lighters waving in the audience, the multitude of color cell phone displays all lit up and being waved, the many many rasta flags waving both on stage and off, masses of people dancing and singing and I am having a hard time believing that I am in the midst of it all.
Capleton’s sons come out and I am in absolute awe that such young men (the littlest looking no older than 8 or 9) can move and sing with such energy.
Then Tanya Stevens comes out and sings a song that I swear reached out to the hearts and souls of the Jamaican people, I watched peoples expression as she sang and it tore at my heartstrings. I don’t know the title but I remember the words “…..you expect us to vote, and yet we’re still broke…..” This was a week before the elections and she sang about the hardships of living in Jamaica but the people always remaining strong. That did it for me and I cried, me the blubbering idiot right there with all those people around. At the end she asked for a response from all her Jamaican people in the crowd. I whisper to Paul, I’m waiting for a nice Jamaican family to adopt me, does that count?
A little while later I watch as pure chaos unfolds from the crowd down below. I see people screaming and running and I look at sheer terror in the faces of many. I freeze up in my seat and my heart starts beating a mile a minute. I have no idea what is going, I just see floods of people scattering in every different direction and I imagine a fire or gunshots. Paul feels me tense as I back straight up into him. He tells me that it’s a fight “That’s why I don’t like being down there in the crowd”. The artist beckons the people to come back and to those that started the fight to stop. People slowly start making their way to the stage and the show goes on. I relax although it takes me awhile to stop shaking.
Sizzla ends up being a no show, and I am dissapointed because I have fallen in love with the Dry Cry song since I have been out there. but Capleton is the last entertainer of the night and his stage presence is amazing. He has an entourage of people dancing and singling along with him on stage and the people in the audience go crazy. There are at least 100 rasta flags waving in the air and the flames from the lighters looked so beautiful from where we were standing. Paul calls Devon on his cell and asks him to meet us downstairs to try and make our way out before the big exit. We work our way through the crowd and stop not to far from the exit doors. All I see are hoards of people on all sides of me and we have a great time dancing to a few more songs before we leave.
The three of us exit and Paul says to me as we are leaving “Did you have a good time”? UGH, could you tell? This is handsdown the best night I had while I was there. I will be sure to try and make a reggae show on all future trips.
We make our way out of the gates and into the parking lot. There are already a lot of people standing outside. We stop and talk with a group of people who can’t leave because a mess of cars have parked around theirs.
We find the car and make our way back to Ochi. If I thought the ride to St.Mary was hair raising I wasn’t prepared for this. It seems that everyone on the road needed to be the first in line and Devon was right up in there. “Put your seatbelt on” I say at Paul as we sit in the backseat. “I don’t need to wear a seatbelt………” “Put it ON”. I hiss at him. He sighs and buckles up for safety. I don’t care about the cost of repairing the car at this point, I just want us to arrive in one piece. I look out the window and I see 3-4 motorcycles whiz by at impossible speeds, they weave in and out of traffic, each having a girl at the rear. Even Paul and Devon have to point out the insane speeds they are driving at. Just get me back to the hotel alive I think to myself.
We make it back to the hotel and I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. It was a long day.

I was fortunate to go to a concert in Dones last December. We saw Bene Man Luciano,and numerous artists.
The crowd was as big out side as inside.
We were able to get close and had a fantastic time all night till 4:30am.
I will always remember that night.
Cool night about 2000 ft, I wish I knew all the artists but MisS was jumpin' and dancin'; smiles all around.

Babymommadrama-been there done that (he wasn't Jamaican) girl at least she spoke to you. The one I dealt with wanted to kill me, she was still in love with her babydaddy. To my knowledge those two psychopaths are back together, and I say that's one less nut on the street that we women have to deal with

Girl I am bein fair. I was always nice to her and everytime she saw me she'd bare her teeth at me like the wolf she is and cut her eyes. She's pretty too! She's about 5'8, long hair, fair skinned, but terrible adult acne. No reason to be jealous. Anyway for the sake of their son I was nice to her and she never even tried to get to know me.
