Today I spent the entire day cleaning out my apartment. I threw out 4 trash bags worth of junk I didn't even know I had. And that's not even all of it.
In the morning going to Detroit for a day. My friend is gonna show me around and try to sell DTW to me. I might have to live there for 6 months before moving to FL because I don't know if I can afford living in FL and commuting to DTW now. So we'll see.

Been here for 10-11 years, we have our stuff, our 2 son's stuff, his brother has lived with us a couple of times (for 6-9 months each time) and we still have some of his stuff, his Aunt lived with us (we took care of her in her last year of life) so we have some of her stuff also. Good thing we have a big old house (3,600 sq foot) 2 bedrooms down and 6 rooms upstairs. BUT IT IS FULL! Gotta get it cleared out and fixed up to sell - thinking we'll buy a houseboat to retire on (can't have much stuff and have to be in a warm climate).
Stuff, stuff, stuff everywhere I look I see stuff.
Enjoy your time off and your trip. Still tapping mi foot waiting for next installment.

While I'm sleeping in the next morning, Makeda sneaks out for a morning run. Regardless of my instructions to wake me up in the morning she doesn't. And since I hardly ever get to sleep in state-side, Naturally I don't wake up on my own.
She tells me she befriended a rasta on the beach who was determined to get her to go on his glass bottom boat in Green Island. We go to breakfast at one of my favorite restaurants Rainbow something. [As you can see I'm bad with names}. Unfortunately it's closed!! I hope it will reopen. We divert to another place nearby and eat. We run into Makeda's rasta again and tell him that Green Island is not an option. Makeda finds a big colorful lizard next to our table, and takes a picture. The rasta happen so stand in the lizard's background. The rasta now thinks she likes him and is taking a picture of him! Lard ave mercy! You should have seen his facial expression when he realized she was interested in the reptile and not him. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]
It's time for grocery shopping. We take a short walk to R&B Bike Rental. There we find my friend Paulette, and her husband Roger. Some of you might remember the story of how I met Paulette about five years ago. [Check old trip report archives if you're not]. We catch up on the developments sine my last visit, meanwhile her helper is getting a couple of bicycles ready for us. She says business is really slow this summer. It's evident by the number of motorbikes and bikes parked out front.
We head south, pass the roundabout and head uphill towards West End. A quick stop at the bank to exchange money. [TIP: Never exchange We pause to enjoy the cliffs.

Below you can see someone snorkeling near a cave. A nice breeze flows from the sea. As we approach the lighthouse we can see a beautiful 7 mile high cumulus cloud towering ahead. It must be nearing 3 p.m.; the daily shower is in store for us. We walk around the lighthouse at west end and quickly head back towards town. Well, evidently not quickly enough because the rain caught us. Instead of seeking shelter we just pressed on. The lukewarm shower on a hot afternoon actually felt good. We pull into the Hi-Lo parking lot and go inside. Now going into an air conditioned building while soaking wet did NOT feel good. But boy do you dry off quick. Bananas, sugar, Ting, Stripe, coffee, cookies, and all other food necessities were packed up and now the tricky part. Figuring out the weight and balance of the bags hung on the handlebar of the bikes. The next hazardous step is getting on and taking off. Once in motion it's no problem. Groceries get dropped of at the Whistling Bird and we press on. Of course we had to pull into the Negril Aerodrome and watch the Air Jamaica Express agents load up the DH6 Twin Otter, and the turboprop blast off the short runway using less than half of it! We were going to go to a beach on the road to Green Island but the sandflies started biting so we went back to the Bird for a late afternoon swim there.
Unfortunately Makeda had to go back to Detroit to work the next day. I wasn't going to send her on a minibus on her first trip, since she'd probably end up in Kingston or somewhere. So we decided she'll go on a tourist bus to see the coastal route through Lucea and have as much time in the morning. The problem is Maciek doesn't travel on tourist busses and therefore has no idea how and where to get one. Jim's (WB's owner's) son does some research and gives us a number to call in the morning. For $20US a tourist bus will take her to the airport. The party was at Roots Bamboo tonight.Comment

What pure unadulterated ecstatic joy is showing in Makeda's picture. She has a beautiful smile. I think that picture expresses how all of us feel in Jamaica....young,beautiful, and FREE.Comment

The "tourist bus" takes Makeda to the airport in the morning. She doesn't want to go. She;s hooked on Jamaica.....My mission accomplished!
I decide to just spend the rest of the day relaxing.
I lay down on the warm sand under a palm tree, open a good book, and enjoy the sounds the gentle surf makes, while the bright Jamaican sun caresses my skin. And a smooth breeze keeps me cool. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]
OK it wasn't a palm tree but a seagrape tree. But it just sounds so much better with a palm tree. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] But with them there a danger of falling coconuts. So not a good idea to lounge under one for too long. Every now and then I get the urge to take a swim, and run into the warm surf. No need to slow don't because the water doesn't feel cold to my belly like it does in Florida, nor does it make you stop in your track upon first contact with water, like it does in New Jersey because its FREEZING. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]
In the afternoon I take a walk down the beach. The daily, scheduled, express, always on time, 3pm thunderstorm is rolling in. This one quite more developed than usual and after the few drops here and there become an avalanche of water I seek shelter at a nearby empty restaurant. Soon others join me under the leaking roof while lightning bolt pound the water, and hundreds of gallons a minute pour down from the sky. Some brave guy decides now is a good time to go out to his boat. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but when the interval between the time you see lightning and the time you hear thunder is less than 1 second, you are less then a mile away from thousands of volts of electricity hitting the water, in which you are standing. But amazingly the brave boat owner thought nothing of it, and the lightning continued to strike about him while he getting totally drenched worked on his boat. Hmmm.
In the evening GeoCox has a party planned over at the Negril Villas. I walk there and the lady at the front desk say's GeoCox went out to dinner with his girlfriend. She said there are a bunch of ladies waiting at the bar for him. I proceed to the bar to find the two bartenders playing dominoes. They haven't seen Marilyn, Queen and the crew. And if they had they would have known it. Trust me. The ladies presence is hard to miss. I stick around for about half an hour then head out to De Buss and Risky Business where there's music tonight.
I forgot to mention, I have moved to Roots Bamboo that afternoon. I get a double room for $20US. The receptionist recognized me from the countless time I've stayed there before. Despite doing nothing all day I'm tired. But its the good kinda tired. The kind that can only come from doing nothing. I wish I could do nothing more often. I'm going to be in Negril in early December (a first-timer from Oz) and, after reading beautiful lines like the one above, I feel like I'm already there...
