It is the day that I thought would never, ever come. It is 3AM the morning of July 14th and when the alarm goes off at 5:00 in the morning it will be alright for my heart to start beating and for me to start feeling again, because I am going home to Jamaica. So why am I up at 3:00 AM? Anticipation you say...nope... I took care of that with two tylenol PMs. I was determined to get a good night's sleep and not arrive in Jamaica a zombie. Well, my daughter is out of town, and her little yorkie (who sleeps all day when she is here, decides that he MUST go to the restroom. That's it, after he wakes me up and I remember that in two hours my life can begin again. No more sleep for me. Rockie of course comes back in and begins to snore.
The ride on Northwest was smooth as silk and in no time I am in Jamaica. The door of the plane opens and I run down the steps with my heavy carry on like it is a pillow. Inside I have my $5.00 bills folded and ready to hand to the 6 members of the litte group that has to sing that tired tourist song, swing those skirts and smile for 8 hours with little or no appreciation shown. Most people walk past them like they are inantimate objects. They smile a real smile in appreciation and for a minute they are singing just for me.
Breeze through imi and I hear my name on the loud speaker at Sangster. "Marilyn Williams, Miss Marilyn Williams. passenger arriving from Memphis Tennessee,Please meet your party at the information desk." Now you know I can't do accents on a computer, but hearing my name in that melodic Jamaican voice, and feeling like somewhat of celebrity, I think 'hey I like this.
I know my "party" is Sala and I can't wait to see him.
There he is "waitin" on me!!!! We get out of there and stop at the first gas station for two Red Stripes, both for me....
I got my stripe, got my driver, I got water to look at...just shoot me.
The drive to Negril is a quick thrill on the new road. I get Sala to talk a little, but would descibe him mostly as the strong silent type that has to be drawn into conversation.
We arrive at Bar B Barn and all I want to do is get to the bar to see if Queen is waiting on me as requested. (She liked to say "ordered", but no one orders the Queen).
She's there in all her glory, and we squeal and hug and may the drinking begin.
I take a nap and then it is off to Debuss with Queen and her Alberto. Now that's a whole section in itself, more about that later. At Debuss I met "Shaka" from Aiwa's report. He was amazed that I knew about him and said that he was very much looking forward to her return in November.
I also unfortunately attracted the attention of a young man we will henceforth call my stalker, because for the next 8 days he will be like a second UNWANTED skin.I cannot move for this thing following me around. Anyway, he latched onto us at Debuss, and part of the game is to make the other guys on the beach think this is your girl. No way!!!!!!!! I just got here and I am keeping my options open.
After Debuss her royal highness gets this mischvieous look on her face and leads us (including a new friend Connie, and her little hot pursuer) to Legends pool. It is about 1:00 AM and the Queen knows the nightwatchman. Off go the lights, off go the clothes. I explain to my little stalker that I am about to remove my clothes, BUT NOT FOR HIM, it is for me and because I want the experience. Don't touch me, don't come near me!!!!!!!!! I HAVE A MAN, and you ain't it.
Might as well have been talking to a BRICK WALL. He chases me all over the pool convinced that I really want him but I am just being coy. After several cursing outs Alberto steps in and says something to him in patois. With this he retreats to the other side of the pool to hold his honor in his hand and pout the rest of the night. Well I can't blame the boy. The royal couple are doing their best impressions of teengers in heat, and Connie is letting whats-his name distract her from the hurt of a Jamaican love affair gone bad. I JUST WANT TO SWIM, under the perfect moonlit and starry night. in water that feels like warm velvet on my skin. It was magical to say the least.
I think we stayed until almost 3. When Queen introduced me to the night watchman he pointed proudly to his hat that read "security", and said "see this, I have the only hat in Negil like this one, and don't you forget it." At that I stood up out of the water and flashed my breast at him and said "see these, I got the only pair of these in Negril, and don't you forget it."
