Tawanna wants them to experience Jack Ruby's, I head em up and herd em out. You have got to know that quite a stir occured in downtown Ochii when I walked these seven beauties over to Jack Ruby's. They are building a shopping center next door. I want you to know that all work came to a halt and he men just posted up outside Jack Ruby's.. They all whipped out their cell phones and started calling people. By no time, the place was surrounded. There was no escape!

The girls decide to go outside and be friendly with me keeping a close eye on the proceedings. Before it was over I was Mommie. Well ok.
One of the guys finds out that one of the girls likes the local herb and says he has something special for her. She acts like Xmas came and is jumping up and down calling it by name. You would have thought he gave her a mink coat. Of course it is all greek to me.

I buy a Red Stripe and give the bartender(lady) $5.00 US. She gives me back $70.00J. I don' think so! It took going to the manager to make her do the right thing. Give one of the guys $3.00 and he gets 3 Rd Stripe for that. Hint: send a Jamaican to the bar.
THEY LOVE THEIR FOOD and eat up. The guys hate to see us leave.
Tawanna wants the girls to see Skycastles, so we get a van.
They are in quiet awe of my view. I send Roberto (Curry' helper) for vodka and ting, and we get plastered.

Toby decides to try overproof. The end result of this was that we end up not going out at all that night. I wake up at midnight and heat up my conch soup. It is delicious and I go back to sleep. More about that later.
I am happy with the day's activities and I am satisfied that I got them out of that three ring circus called the Grand for a minute.

Monday morning I wake up so sick I can't see. I have been vomiting, diarrhea,it's coming out of my nose. Damn that conch chowder! This is my day to tour with Chef. I HAVE TO GO. I know that he may have turned down other work for me, and that he needs the money, but how am I going to function? There's a knock on the door.I think it is honey or Chef, so I open up.
There stands a tall strange Jamaican man. Ok smarty what do you do now? Your door is open and there is a strange man standing there. He smiles and says, is Tawanna here?
He makes me remember him. He is the Mandingo from Jus Cheers. The guy Tawanna met her first night. The one I fussed at her so for not getting his number.
Well I'll be damned. How did you find us ? It wasn't hard he said. It seems that all one has to do is ask for the lady with the silver hair and I am found. That can be a good thing or a bad thing depending.
Although I am sick as a dog, I agree to go to the Grand with him to find Tawanna. She has spent the night there with her girls.
Now this will take some doing because I know first names, not last. They will not even call a room for you at the Grand unless you can give them the name of the occupants. Lord!
SO we go and Mandingo has a friend on the front desk. He calls the room for us.
"Tawanna, it's Marilyn. You will NEVER guess who I am standing in the lobby with? Your Mandingo from Jus Cheers." "I'm on my way down !!!!!", she says.
He takes me back to Skycastles where I can be sick for a while,then goes back for her. It is a long time before we see her again.
None of the girls are up and ready at tour time, so Chef and I head out alone. Chef says that moving around will make me feel better than staying home.

As we head out for Firefly I notice we go through Oracbessa. My partner in Girlfriends Tours Itl. Angie, her Man works at Golden Eye and I am supposed to look him up and take him out one night. I ask Chef to take me there. We ask for him, and have to wait at the gate. When he arrives I walk toward him, hand outstretched (what a Cutie!!!! You go Angie) Just as I am about to take his hand a horrible wave of nausea overcomes me and I run for the hedges to throw up. Some first impression huh! Ok let's try this again. Hand outstretched again, oops, back to the bushes. This time I try a hug because maybe he can hold me up!!! I am soooooooooooo embarrassed. Chef just looks on like this happens everyday.
After a short chat we are off again. The road to Firefly is a mess! How did ELizabeth Taylor and the Queen Mum for God's sake find their way up here.
Chef takes me to Galina to look at houses. I tell him that Queen and I are intent on Moving to Jamaica. Angie too. SO here is the house he took me to look at and another one I thought was fascinating. It would not do for me to own house#1

Now the only reason I am doing this is because Magic says this is THE view, and it is. I cannot imagine being rich,famous, and having this too. No wonder the man died there, I probably would too.
I also quickly realize he was GAY.No one ever told me that!!! Oh the irony of it all homophobic Jamaica revering a Queen. LOL
I think Firefly is beauiful, but I am hungry (I think), so we head back to Ochii. Chef suggests the Ruins, but I want to run by the Grand if we are going there because I want the girls to see it. Tawanna is still MIA with Mandingo, but I load the other six into Chef's van and take them to the Ruins. In traffic a guy threatens to leap from his van into ours and asks Chef to "Give him one." Chef just laughs.
Boy that Chef! He had this grin on his face!!!!
We take the girls back home and I go back to Skycastles to doctor on myself. By the way,,, I ordered food and couldn't eat it.

After we take the girls back, but before Chef takes me home I ask him to take me to the cambio. We are walking down the street and someone taps me on the shoulder. I turn to my right and look right into A-hole's eyes. He is smirking at me with that "yeah here I am and didn't mess up your night" look. I look away and keep walking. I had told Chef about the incident, so I pointed him out to Chef. Somehow I was hoping Chef charge down the street and beat the hell out of him. I don't know patois yet, but as we are walking away he is telling his posse that I accused him of saying some tings to me at the club and that he had "said nothing" to me. OOOO this made me mad, but I kept walking.
On our way back past he mumbled something to me. When I did not respond he called "Hey, White hair".I did not respond, I kept walking. He then asked Chef if he was from Negril, Chef said "No mon" and got in the van. I think in talking to him I might have mentioned I had just came from Negril and I think he was trying to figure out what Chef was to me.
But what if Chef was my man? Wasn't he being kind of bold bothering me under the circumstances?
Now this is really bothering me because I really like walking in Ochii and often go out alone. I notice that he has a posse of supporters and I will be no match for all of them alone. Yet, I continue to have my trip as usual.
As luck would have it, I go about my business and do not see him again.

Not to disrupt the narrative, but I can’t figure how to insert a comment to Murray and others, within the thread, so will do it here….

Going back to the club incident, Jamaican women that I’ve observed are masters at deflecting unwanted comments/rude attention. Responses vary from a silent stare that would freeze a hurtling train in its tracks, to a ‘kissing of teeth’ along with a look of utter contempt and disgust, combined with a slow saunter away from the rude one, leaving him silent and deflated like a balloon that’s lost its helium bounce.

We’ve only had one incident in our club where there was a confrontation between male and female – a young man from out of the area, who took the hat from the head of a young lady he admired, and proceeded to dance around the dance floor with it, holding it high out of her reach. Not a hard thing to do, since he was well over 6’ and she was no taller than I (5’2”.) She was furious and started screaming and whaling on him with both fists. At this point, the crowd surrounded her and edged her away, and Soloman and his father escorted the young man outside.

He got a quiet but intense, no-nonsense lecture, and was refused re-admittance. Not a major crime was committed, true, but the fact he did not respect her wishes when the flirting game had gone too far made the issue something we chose not to continue by letting him back inside (and not having to wonder whether the young lady was calm enough to let the situation go without retaliation.)

Ladies, if harassed and you are out alone – simply go to the front door – all big clubs have bouncers/security, explain the situation. Even the small clubs have someone – a bartender, a local who is adept at “mediating”…SOMEONE with authority, and believe me, SOMEONE will have seen what was going on. Of course, the offender COULD claim innocence, that you didn’t understand what he said, or misunderstood his actions…..but the fact that you called his bluff should put him on notice not to mess with you again.

But, should you get loud, vocal or physically combative, yes, YOU will most likely be the one removed first – partly for YOUR safety, partly to quiet the disturbance and not rile the crowd until things can be sorted out.

“American style” flirting or even innocent exuberance can be misinterpreted here. Being a tourist has nothing to do with getting “instant justice” – if you’re going to hang with the locals, act like the locals….spend a whole lot more time observing the social situation and dynamics you are interested in being in or around.

Also bear in mind that many Jamaican women at the clubs, especially in small towns, are ‘regulars’ – people all know each other and the respect level is different. A place that caters to a mix of locals and tourists will have a different vibe than a place that is 99% local. (Much less harassment in my opinion….)

I am hopefully not discouraging anybody from going out to party – but ALWAYS have someone with your party as a designated “observer/babysitter/bodyguard if the other person plans to get loose, and neither of you are completely familiar with Jamaican runnings. And if someone in the party decides to wander off on their own, then they’re ON their own with whatever situation they encounter, good or bad.

And finally, remember that flirting, and picking up/entertaining visitors, ESPECIALLY single females, is a way of life for many, many of the footloose-and-fancy-free men of the resort towns – it is a lucrative business for those with polish and finesse, it is a training ground for many aspiring lotharios.

Ask yourself this: if you meet this impossible to resist man at night on the town, where is he going to be by day? Not working? Don’t buy into the story of him having a “week’s vacation” conveniently at this very moment, from work. Do you meet him on the beach by day? Where is he at night? STILL not working? Hmmmmm. AND, if he is working when you meet him, and makes that play for you in the first 5 minutes, 3 hours, half-day, whatever…..not that you’re not totally irresistible, but have you spent any time at all watching him from afar to see how he deals with other ladies passing through?

Marilyn and Angie, your tour group ladies need to know the full hundred on this issue before they get here. It will be up to each individual as to how far they want to go with the men they meet, but I think it needs to be an issue that doesn’t sugar coat anything or get glossed over lightly.
Fun in the sun, summertime flings, island romance, whatever term you care to use, is certainly here IF that is what they are looking for, but they need to know the repercussions.

Marilyn, lovin' your report. I like a 'say it like it is' woman! Also, really enjoying your pics. Would you mind sharing what brand/type of camera you're using?

Nothing worse than getting sick from bad seafood! I admire you for going out & about in that condition.

When you get to the Grand and you walk out on the beach go left. You will reach a fence with an ominous sign posted THE JAMAICA GRAND TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SAFETY OF GUESTS BEYOND THIS POINT. As soon as you step past that fence you will see a little wood hut. The watersports guys are there. Ask for Albert or Lester. They will take good care of you. Bargain, negotiate, they will work with you. You will also have more fun over there than you will at the Grand.

Gladly. My camera (I LOVE MY CAMERA) is a Fuji FinePix. I bought it after Sea The World published her trip report. Do you remember the picture of the star fish in the water and the sting ray. They looked like you could reach into the computer and touch them!!!!! I emailed her and she gave me the info and I went straight to Circuit City and bought everything. I got the card for it that holds 470 pictures. It also will do video clips. Card,camera, batteries, charger, case. Right at $450.00, but worth every penny. Small.compact easy to carry. I LOVE IT. Get you one.

(and excellent advice from Sienna too! ladies definitely need a good strong "No, thanks" if they are not interested, and to be extremely careful if they are interested! Many of these "Single" men often have a wife, a couple of mateys and a few children to feed)

Marilyn - Thanks! I need a new camera, so I printed your post to save when I have time to shop...leaving for Negril tomorrow morning, so the camera shopping will have to be 'soon come!'

BTW - Not only are the pics clear & colorful, you are an excellant photographer!

I was wishing that your report would be done before I left, but now I have something to look forward to upon return when I have the 'back to reality blues!'
