OK folks. This is my first attempt at a trip report….so have mercy. Our first trip was last year and I’m still ridden with guilt over not having posted about it….I was so ridden in fact, that many months went by after that trip where I dared not post. My excuse is that other than our fabulous trip to Treasure Beach, there really wasn’t much to say about it. We ate, we sunned…the end. I am indebted to the people on these boards for all I have learned about this beautiful island. After this first trip, I have spent my time reading books about JA and hovering over these message boards. Armed with your trip notes and lists of where to eat and what to do, we have been able to see the island in a way we never would have on our own. So thank you jamaicaphiles! (particularly Jim, Geo, Ohliz, Sienna, QueenB and Marilyn and all the other regulars on this board) ...how many trips before I can join your club?
Last year we stayed down on Bloody Bay at Couples. It was nice…I really have no complaints about Couples other than it was just too big and there wasn’t much to see down there…not the warmest people in the world staying there either. One AI after the other…ho hum…a beautiful beach though. It was a good first trip, it gave us a flavor of the island….but only a flavor and I want the whole meal!
This then is our second trip to paradise (2/24 to 3/5). We are determined to experience the Real Negril this time. I have goals: I want to see dominoes being played, find some callaloo seeds to bring home, learn how to cook it and sun (this should be first, I’m tanorexic) and snorkel (never done that).
We wake at 3AM to drive the hour and a half to the airport in Portland. Our flight leaves at 7AM…We wake and bake our way down the highway…it’s going to be a long travel day and I am not a great plane person…so the early morning buzz is necessary. I’m a little alarmed when I discover the plane from Portland to Newark is a little 50 seater but it turns out to be the smoothest flight I’ve ever had. I have brought Walk Good to read on the plane and it proves to be perfect for the trip. Next flight from Newark to Mobay (Continental) has surprisingly few people on it. So with no delays and a clear flight down we arrive in Mobay. I am learning to like flying on clear days like this as the views out the window are just so awesome. I love the little reefs, the color of the water…hard to concentrate on reading with so much to see out the window.
We take boardie advice and go to the Immigration line that is the furthest to the left…works like a charm and we are out the door of the airport looking for Sala. And there he is! What to say about having this guy meet you at the airport other than you know you are in good hands immediately and it’s just so nice to see a smiling face that you know. He’s got a nice new van so we are riding in style. The heat just feels so good, I am breathing deep and loving every minute of it. We chat our way down the road. It’s a beautiful day in paradise (aren’t they all?). Already this is so different from last year. All those pre-trip jitters…GONE. I am just filled with anticipation for the next 10 days.
Sorry, I’ve got to stop here and go to work. Will try to post more tonight. Hang in there…there will be pictures…so keep checkin back! There's no turning back is there?
