Yes it is true that on the other side of the Pond in some of the Mediterraen tourist areas like Ibiza, Faliraki in Corfu and Aya Napa in Cyprus, the behaviour of young people is very bad.
I would agree that their behaviour is a lot worse than the Springbreakers. That is why I would NEVER go on holiday to those places.
They even have programmes on TV showing how bad they behave.
I just love the Caribbean and nothing (not even Springbreakers) would stop me returning each year to enjoy myself.

I wasn't going to get in on this because not being Jamaican how can I say what visitors shouldn't do when going to Jamaica (of course one would thing anything that violates the rules of common courtesy should be a no brainer anywhere you go) However just having spent my afternoon downtown on streets jam-packed with summer tourists from all over the place i thought I could interject a few of my pet peeves with tourists here and apply them to how I would feel if Jamaican saying as how I'm quite sure i would feel exactly the same.

1) do not act like you are king of the world or have purchased special rights and privileges above the residents of your vacation destination. Residents appreciate the money you interject in the economy but do not wish to be viewed or treated as second class citizens simply because you have graced them with your presents.

2) Do not gawk at people less fortunate than you nor take cute pictures of people who are poor to show your friends back home what poor people somewhere else look like (Today group of tourist photographing a street man (we have many here) like he was some sort of attraction then walked off laughing. I could have and maybe should have gone up and kicked all of them swiftly in the shins)

3) do not throw your garbage on the ground, in the water or under a log somewhere, i don't care if there is a guy that will clean it up later. It is disrespectful to the environment and to the people that have to live in your trash heap when you go home.

4) Make way. don't assume that all locals must move out of your way when you are walking down the sidewalk simply because they are locals

5) Say thank you. If someone is kind enough to give you advice or help you out some way appreciate it and thank them. the people are not all here as your personal tour guides, and if we take time out of our busy schedule to help you we should receive some appreciation.

6) if the service somewhere sucks do not take it out on the entire population. It is not their fault you didn't get the breakfast you wanted. equally remember the waiter or waitress is not the cook, the cleaning lady does not manage the hotel, and the guy at the cash register quite often does not own the store. don't take your frustrations out on people that have nothing to do with your problem

7) If your having a bad day, bad life, or bad eternity, stay home spare the rest of us from having to deal with your bad mood.

8) Respect, respect, respect. If you wouldn't want someone doing it in your house, don't do it in mine.

9) Laws do not just apply to locals

Well where i am i call myself a local, seems stupid to call myself a Victorian (implies I have a certain set of morals that I dont) or A Canadian because that is the last thing I consider myself, sometimes a BCer but saying as how so many people don't know where BC is (other than a period a long long time ago) that doesn't always work either. I quite frequently call myself by my name [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] but when referring to all the people who live in my town I call them locals to distinguish them from the non locals [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]

so what would you prefer I call myself or other from here or people from there? We've struck off most of the common terms now so I'm up for a decent meaningful alternative [img]/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]
