I must add to this post , while my daughter and i were in Montego Bay , she being 21 years old and myself 48 years. We are not a raceist person at all , but did not know where to stay in Jamaica , we stayed where our travel agent sugested, we know nothing about Jamiaca , only that we wanted to go. I must note here that the women that were there ,were very unfriendly and to the point of being rude to us especially my daughter . Although the men are very friendly !

please dont let that be your judgement of Jamaica women.
I stayed not far from the hotel you stayed at and all (but one she was just jealous a guy she liked paid me lots of attention) the jamaican women i met were great and spent loads of time with then, still in-touch with one of them. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
There are people that can be like that all over the world please dont judge ALL jamaican women on that bad experience.

I understand what u are saying . i promise i wont judge all Jamiacan women from that one trip , that wouldnt be very nice of me besides im not like that .We just wish we had been given a chance and not judged by my daughters appearnce.I do have to add that she gets the same treatment from women in the usa too .It is a shame that there is so much jealousy between women in the world. I held out on getting in on this thread as long as I possibly could. But I guess I'll throw my two cents in as well.

I am far from an expert on JA, but I have traveled extestensivly throughout the world.

I think that some of you are being a little harsh on some of the tourist. It seems like the only thing that you can do without offending anyone is stand in one spot and hold your breath.

One one hand you say that people should get off of the AI's and see the real Jamaica, but if they don't follow YOUR RULES, then you chastise them. What's up with that?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't JA considered a place to let your hair down and party? Of course you are going have your share of idiots. But that's usually a small minority.

I can see the point about the spring breakers though. But everyone knows that they are usually a rowdy group. If you have a bunch of young people partying and drinking all night and day, you have to expect that some of them will take it too far. I'm not saying it's right, but that it is part of doing business with them. If you don't want spring breakers and their MONEY, then stop advertising JA as a great spring break party spot.

Now as for myself. I am certainly a novice at best when it comes to JA. But the time that I did visit, it left such an impression on me that I told myself that I will get there as many times as I possibly can.

I will say this though. I think that when you visit a place, you should respect the people and their country. And if possible try and learn something about the place before you go. For example, when I went France a few years ago, I brushed up on my french, so that I could at least communicate a little bit. And my being on this board is another example of trying to learn something about a place before you go there. I am not even going to be in JA until December, but I have learned some much by just visiting this board and reading the excellent trip reports on here. It made me kick myself in the a## for not seeing more of the country when I was there last time. I wont make that mistake again I promise.

The whole point that I was trying to make was that it seemed like some people on here who are non-jamaicans were being a little bit holier-thou-thou. I don't care how many times you visit a place, it doesn't make you a resident and the official governer of tourism. So if I drink a little to much one night and get a little too loud, please don't judge me to harshly. AFTER ALL, I AM ON VACATION MON, AND I WANT TO FEEL IRIE. Sorry, I couldn't help it, I just had to throw that in. I'm just a comedian at heart.

Motown, I definitely agree with the points you raised in this post.
I think people are taking these 'rules' too seriously, they are merely meant to give you a 'look in' to see what people's perceptions of you may be.
Ie, you might think it's quite appropriate to go into a bank in your sarong and bikini top.
No-one is demanding that you be bound by these 'rules, and in fact, as people differ, so do their version of what is 'acceptable'.

There're just individual pet peeves and not Rules. My "rules" are not distributed on all inbound flights along with the Customs and Immigration Cards. (Although that would be nice [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] )
And if you behave in a fashion some of us call "out a arda" then you won't be chastised either.

This discussion is just an observation of how some of that actions of tourists in Jamaica (but it really applies to ALL foreign countries you visit and back at home as well) might be perceived from another perspective.

one key thing I think that everybody should remember when traveling, and not a rule, just a point that might help them understand how the residents of their vacation destination feel (and speaking again from my experience of living in a tourist town my whole life) Is that:

You may be on vacation, but the people you see around you, that live there, are not.

We have to raise our children, make a living, and conduct our daily lives in these places. It's not all fun and games for us, and everything you do has an impact on our day to day lives.

that's why i said if you wouldn't want someone doing it in your house, don't do it in mine. Because that is reality. these vacation destinations are someone's home as well as being a fun party spot where you can let your hair down.

it's not that i personally want to see visitors not having any fun, but I would like to see more respect coming from those that are guests in my home. i imagine residents of all tourist destinations all over the world feel the same.

after being disrespected more than a few times I personally have become very leery of tourists, and I'm figuring out how to get the heck out of this town as soon as i can. better for me, better for them [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] however one positive effect it's had in my life is that I am on my best behavior when I travel, I still have fun but make sure i respect the desires of my hosts first, because I know what it's like to have to put up with the tourists that are not respectful.

((walter)) you know it's odd... I have a couple friends whose apartments/houses are 'spotless'... yet when they go to other peoples homes, you have to go round behind them to pick up litter they drop behind - unconscious nasty habit or just plain disrespect?

well , we carried ourselves in a very respectful maner, and we both are open and very friendly . Although our smiles were returned with mean squenched faces and sometimes hateful remarks .Im sorry to have to say this but it is just the truth.
