Re: MoBay - ...my 1st Jamaica experience
The rest of the group soon returned and we were on our way to Rick’s Café.
I was excited, trying to imagine what it is like there. I hadn’t heard much about it, other than you can jump off a cliff if you were brave enough…or drunk enough. I was feeling a buzz from the Appleton, but not drunk so I won’t be leaping off anyone’s cliff. When we arrived, the Georgia gals got off first. I guess they got a whiff of men or cooked food. Either way, they were ready to feast.
Adrienne gave me the grand tour, which ended with us standing in view of “the cliff”! In spite of the cloudy sky, the view of the cascading waterfall was breathtaking.
Every once in a while, the sun would peek out long enough for me to get some really good pictures.
Adrienne said she was going to get “tokens” so that she could purchase a dessert. Some kind of pie, I don’t remember what kind. It sounded good, but I wasn’t hungry. I wanted to see these brave souls leap off this cliff and splash in the crystal waters below. It looked cool, but I would never do it. While she waited in line, I stood at a safe distance and watched the cliff leapers one by one. I couldn’t help but wonder to myself, if I were in my early twenties, would I jump?? Heck NO!
It was amazing to see the extremely handsome men dive into the water then climb the rocky cliff back to the top with ease. The muscles in their backs and legs were so defined that I can see them from where I stood which was near the bar. I thought, if these men look this good from so far away, I can only imagine the view close up. I decided to make my way to the cliff area to get a closer look.
It was extremely crowded, so it took some effort to make my way to the other side. Well…I only made it half way when the rains came pouring down. It didn’t seem to faze the cliff jumpers and some spectators, but I had to run for cover. A wet, white cotton blouse clinging to me and revealing a floral print bra would had drawn a little more attention than I could handle. It was a warm, soothing rain. The kind you can smell and delight in.
I took a few more pictures and then looked for Adrienne to see if she made her purchase. Since I wasn’t going to eat, and I had my own drinking source, I was hoping we could go back to the bus to chill until it was time to return to Montego Bay. Plus I wanted to get a window seat on the bus.
I found Adrienne and she told me that it would be another 15-20 before she would get her dessert. I really didn’t want to wait, but I knew how much she was looking forward to her delight. The rain was coming down in buckets and it was getting more and more crowded under the covering. I ask her if she would mind if I met her back at the van. She said no.
While walking to the van, I look to my right and there’s Vincent sitting under a cluster of trees with other drivers. We made eye contact and my heart skipped a beat when he again smiled and nodded. I got on and found my seat by the window. I settled in and glanced outside. I hope he sees me and decides join me just to chat.
Well that hope is shattered to smithereens when I see the couple from Jersey returning to the van. These two are as interesting as a pair of shoehorns. To keep from conversing with them, I quickly put on earphones and blast Diana King. Aaahhh Diana King, I like her music and have wondered what the heck happened to her. Oh well, I never get tired of hearing “Tumble Down” and “Black Roses”.
I could clearly hear the couple’s conversation. Not that my music was low, but they were loud. They weren’t really having a good time in Jamaica and were looking forward to returning to the states. They also didn’t like being hassled to buy stuff, too many bugs and it was too hot. I kicked up the volume another notch and drowned out their complaining voices with the sweet sound of …”just a little tenderness…at the end of the day is all a women needs, to take her cares away”.
After about 20 minutes, everyone gradually returns and we are head back to MoBay. Adrienne told me that she got her desert and had the pleasure of the company of one named Sonny. Sonny is one of the cliff jumpers. WOW I missed the chance to see him up-close-and-personal!! No I decided to go to the bus and sit and listen to dull and duller. I have to remember to STAY WHERE THE ACTION IS…rain or shine! I got curious and leaned up to ask her how it went.
“What did you talk about?”
“The usual stuff. You know…where from…how long here…are you married..so on and so on. Oh yeh, he wanted me to stay and go to this club on the beach tonight.”
“WHAT?!?!?”
“Yeh, but I told him I wasn’t alone. I told him about you.”
“WHAT?!?!?”
“He said he could introduce you to a few of his friends and you could take your pick.”
“WHAT?!?!?”
“He also said that he would drive us back to Montego Bay…after fixing breakfast for us tomorrow.”
“Adrienne…why are we on this bus going back to the hotel???”
OMG..I couldn’t wait to hear her reason for us missing what sounds like a great opportunity to have fun. Okay..here it comes..are you ready for this??????
“We have nothing to wear.”
“Shoot! You’re right. We didn’t bring a change of clothes. DARN!”
I had nothing else to say. I sat back, set headphones in place with Maxwell and DeAngelo tunes, and swallowed a couple of gulps of Appleton. Now mi ah redee fe leev.
The music and the rum soon took full effect. I was relaxed and enjoying the scenery. What a truly sobering site I see.
The night begins to slowly arrive and I watch attentively as the deep lush greenery along the perimeter of the roadside materializes into black silhouettes against the evening sky. It’s a very peaceful and calming view. As we travel along the bumpy road, the rain continues to sprinkle tiny drops of water on the van windows that accumulate together and slide down like tear drops. Through the haze I can see small structures nestled within the mountainside. Tiny flickers of light glow through the darkness in evidence that someone is there, someone is “home”. I’m on my way to a $250 a night room and someone, who lives on the same earth I do, is out there surviving on less than that a year. I feel gutted right now. Tears fill my eyes as I continue to peer through the rain-sprinkled glass. I no longer hear the chattering. I hope everyone here is seeing what I see and feeling what I feel. Another reality check, through the darkness.
I glance up to look at Vincent. I think he’s looking at me. I smile, he winks, nod, and we travel on. What a moment. What a day. I close my eyes to give thanks to Jah for what I have and to ask that He sustain the little flickers of lights.
