RM, what can I add that everyone hasn't already said ~ this is a great report, very interesting and informative

The pictures are wonderful, too. And that patty! That is one of the most delicious looking things I have seen in my life!

The Japanese have been working in Jamaica for quite some time thus the Buddism although they are not the only ones that practice.

That's very interesting to know, Seveen. How did the Japanese/Buddhists get access to your friends in jail? Do they have a regular program there, sanctioned by the authorities? Do they run these programs only in tourist area facilities or do they do them for average Jamaicans, too?

I will check with my friend over the weekend. This happened about 15 years ago. She was in the prison at St. Catherines for 9 months with everyone else. Lot's of throwing of slop buckets.

Religious plurality is a good thing and I think almost every religion in the world is reflected in Jamaica. I have spent several Christmas there escaping the commercialism and greed that we experience in the US.

People recognize that it is Christmas but things are very low key there and the day soon passes. I was so proud of my son this year. He received a few presents (only small stuff that could fit in the suitcase). He was like - mom this is nice - can we go to the beach?

No, rudemonk, I don't know of any. I do know that the Japanese have a curious history with Jamaica, bred in trade, especially in the coffeefields. The president of United Coffee Company (a Japanese concern) was inducted into the Order of Jamaica back in 1986, and I attended the celebration organized by the Japanese embassy.

When I went back to Jamaica to work as an international volunteer in the 1990s (as part of a Canadian NGO), I ran into a few Japanese aid workers as well. I was told they were mainly doing computer training for local Jamaicans.

I'm going to look around on the Internet to see if there are any temples in Jamaica.
