Loving your report! Your writing is exceptional! I am glad you enjoyed Jamaica and have plans to return. You will love Negril. Seven mile beach and wide open spaces.

I have dreads as well and I get the "are you a rasta?" question. I am not a Rasta. My reason is that I do not believe that Haile Selaisse is the living God. That usually stops the conversation in it's tracks.

MoBay is Heavenly!

Part IV:

Day 3.

I woke up thinking, “First, I need some fried plantains, and second, I need to see a fish before I leave Jamaica.” After breakfast we headed to the beach and booked a trip on the glass-bottom boat. Adrian and another guy from the water sports team prepared the boat for our trip. We walked out on the pier. While we waited, we had some small talk w/Adrian. I told him we hadn’t seen any fish since we’d been in Jamaica. He told us to look over the edge of the pier. Fish! I swear, we’d looked for signs of ocean-life since the minute we’d stepped on the beach the first day we arrived. We hadn’t seen anything. Adrian says, “Let there be fish!,” and suddenly, there are fish. What in the world? Maybe Jamaican men have magic powers.

Adrian introduced us to all kinds of sea life: coral, Jamaican piranha, sea urchins. He promised to take us snorkeling later that day. The glass-bottom boat was fun, but short.

On to the next free activity – sailing. That was a mistake. Nothing but cold salt water whipping me in the face for 20 minutes. After sailing, we were out of ideas. The guys suggested we go jet skiing or parasailing, but we couldn’t afford that. We spent some time in the water, on the floating trampoline, on the beach… We talked to the guys. It was a lazy summer day. Then, Miguel invited me to make a run with him – on the jet ski. He strapped me up in a life jacket and told me to hop on.

“Where’s the seatbelt,” I asked. I wasn’t serious, but I am terrified of moving objects that don’t have safety devices.

“I wouldn’t let anything ever hurt you,” he said.

Hmm. I think there’s some underlying meaning to that, but I’ll leave it alone. We went up the coast to Pier 1 and boarded a submarine boat. There, I met Balfour and Lynton. They offered me a Red Stripe and we sat for about an hour and shot the breeze. Balfour gave me a tour of the submarine boat. He taught me some patois, “Whadda gwon?” I taught him the hip hop equivalent, “What’s crack-a-lackin’?” Lynton asked me if I had a sister, and told me he wanted to marry her, sight unseen.

When we got back to Breezes, a volleyball game had started up. Now, me and sports don’t mix at all. I’m scared of balls. I’m scared of getting hit. Somehow, Miguel talked me into joining the game. He did his best to shield me from getting hit, but I did eventually take one to the shoulder.

As the sun began to set, a few of us swam to the water trampoline and hung out. Me and ‘Princess’ (I don’t know if that’s her real name), a nice girl I met who works at the hotel, sat and watched the guys show off. They took turns diving off the trampoline, pushing each other off the trampoline, going under the trampoline and poking us in the butt and feet… Eventually the activity died down and they started asking if they could touch my hair. Although I don’t usually let people touch my hair, it seemed like a bonding moment, so I let them. For the rest of the evening, they called me Bob Marley’s Daughter and Lauryn Hill. I took both as big compliments.
As the sun set, the group got smaller. Miguel and I swam back to shore. I had dinner reservations. He asked me if we (me and lil’ sis) were going out that night. Since Marguritaville was the only thing open, we decided we’d go there. He said he would pick us up around eleven. This time, we’d be going by land instead of by sea. I was kind of disappointed. I liked traveling by speedboat, but Miguel thought we would be more comfortable in a car.

After a great dinner, Miguel, lil’ sis, and I went to Marguritaville. I wasn’t in the best mood. The deejay played nothing but Usher and 50 Cent and Jay-Z and whatever else was popular back home. And that was the point; I can hear that crap back home. I didn’t come all the way to Jamaica to hear American music. The other tourists seemed to like it, though. Again, another point; I didn’t come all the way to Jamaica to party with Americans. I ached for a real Jamaican club with real dancehall and roots reggae and real Jamaicans, not drunken frat boys and snow bunnies hopping around humping each other. As the night went on, the deejay played a few dancehall tunes. That was after a snow bunny spilled a beer on me and a frat boy asked me if I would give him a birthday kiss. I was ready to go! So we went.

Miguel took us back to Breezes. I showered and fell asleep before my head hit the pillow.

I totally understand about the music. I mean I like hip-hop, pop, 80's music as much as the next person but like you..I didn't come all the way to Jamaica to hear it.

Selectors in Ochii, like at the River party and Jus Cheers sort of do the music in segments, there is a hip hop/rap segment, then roots, then dancehall, and at The Rooftop they hit this phase that can only be described and African rhythmns.

As for M'ville, the one in Ochii, they do a little better, but think about it, Mobay, and the fact that Jimmy Buffet owns the place ought to give you a little insight.

Even at the one in Ochii, we got better cooperation from the selector when we sent Sistacaf to ask for the Jamaican music. It changes immmediately, when Classy or Ochee Heart asked. this was not the case....now you draw whatever conclusion you like from that, but they will all tell you it is true.

To find the music you came here for you will need to go to the country.
A street dance in Sheffield..... Grange Hill on a Sunday Night...... one of the band nights on the beach in Negril...... Treasure Beach,just about any place there.
That’s where you will find the music.

there are quite a few good clubs in MoBay. I'm surprised you weren't pulled out to a few.

But you will still see plenty of humpin' and lots lots more, lol...

Like it or not, Hip Hop is very popular on the island, but the strangest mix I ever heard was in a club in Negril where an Ellie set was followed quickly by, of all freakin' things, Kenny Loggins' "Footloose."

The place freakin' erupted, though.
