Marilyn, as usual your words and images move me to all call kinds of emotional places. I have to tell you that you sound more and more like a transplanted Jamaica each time I visit with you.

My parents and all'a de friends from back home go through the same agony with Jamaica. They left Jamaica for the UK 50 years ago. As kids we'd here them moan and groan about how much they miss the familiar ways and faces of people back home.

They say they don't feel quite themselves here. They function they have a home, stability, a career, Canadian friends...but its like something is always missing. My father often says he's never quite as relaxed in his own skin here as he is when visiting home. I read that comment often in trip reports and I smile because I think Jamaica has that effect on people that are open to understanding her...warts and all. You don't have to be born there.

Thanks for taking us back home Marilyn. I tell you I can't wait to join GFT next year!

agony.....I have had the privilage recently of having the time to really TALK to two Jamaican friends at length. One man is so cool and laid back and talks so slow adn deliberate that he measures every word. When he speaks, you just feel that it is this awesome indisputable truth coming out.

Angie gave me a long list of questions to ask these men for her that she wanted honest answers to. I couldn't get around to all of them that evening, but I did aske J one important one. As a Jamaican who has now lived in America for a while, what are your honest impressions.

He said three things which I do respect.

1. I do not like the fact that you do not have a sense of community like Jamaica. He says that where he is living/working in Ochio, it strikes him that people do not know the person next door, nor do they care to. He says that he wants to know who and what are surrounding him in his community.

2. We are in "indoor" society/ He says that Jamaicans do not spend the amount of time we do indoors, hold up so to speak. They are OUT doing things, walking, visiting, commuting, soccer, dominies, working, partying, but not at the house as much as we are.

3. the PREJUDICE. He says he does NOT have to deal with that in Jamaica on the level that he is presented with it here in the US.

I agree with all 3.

These are the things that make him feel like he is in exile while he tries to make a better living for his family.

Windows in Jamaica are supposed to be OPEN!!

Doors too for that matter!
From here on, I want you to keep your paws OFF the A/C unless it is unbearably uncomfortable!

From the moment I arrive at where I'm staying I open windows and doors and leave them open until the last person goes to sleep for the night.
And then it's only the doors that get closed!

Open window and a fan...

This last trip, my flight was cancelled and they put us up at Wyndham Rose Hall. I had a beautiful air-conditioned room. As soon as I got in, I went and opened the sliding doors and shut down the A.C. I had no fan but it was comfortable enuff with the door open facing the sea...

I fell asleep to the sound of waves lapping the beach, tree frogs, crickets... ahhhhhhh.....
