Bob is a Prophet. At the very least, you have to agree that he is a National Hero. When in Jamaica, we talked with a woman who said there was a question of whether Bob should be a national hero because national heroes are freedom fighters. And Scott came back with such quickness, having known the answer to that question for a long time – “He fought for the freedom of minds.”

Tiger, I just joined the forum today. I sat at work today and read entranced about you trip to Jamaica. I feel as though I am right there with you as you travel and explore. You really have a way with words and writing. I will be going on my first trip to Jamaica the end of March. Reading your post, I feel as though I have already been.I cannot wait to read more. Keep up the good work!

I am so glad you are all enjoying this - hopefully some people who might not have visited some of these places will make the trip.


I was loaded down with my camera, a video camera, an iPod with a microphone, Scott had his camera – you name it. However, on the way up, I did not want to take any pictures. I wanted to take it all in. Sometimes when I take pictures, I miss the entire scene, and I did not want that to happen.



Before we left Ocho Rios, Delroy took us past a school, or a park, where there is a building, with all of the National Heroes on the side, and the national flag, flower, tree, bird, fruit and motto.



I was so impressed with the Jamaicans we met, and their knowledge of the national heroes, what they had done for the country, and so on. Of course we had seen these types of displays over the past several days, and they had been explained to us by at least 2 other drivers, but it was cool. On the wall were the words from “Redemption Song” as well.

So, off we go through Fern Gully, once again, and Delroy and I have our aforementioned discussions about the penis pipes, and Jack in The Bush.
In addition, we somehow got on the subject of “puni printers” (I brought it up) and Delroy informed me that “Sometimes we say, she is from Buff Bay.” So, I shared with him Moose Knuckle and Camel Toe and we had some laughs.



Don’t ask me how we got on this subject. We just had that kind of vibe – like we were old friends for a long, long time. We were all really comfortable around one another – obviously. Besides, I would be willing to place a bet, that NO GUEST from Jamaica Inn has ever said “puni printer, moose knuckle or camel toe” to Delroy on a trip.





As we are driving up and around the Dry Dock Mountains, we are amazed at the layers upon layers of hills and the depth of them. It reminded me of what a chess board looks like, if you look at it at chess board level – the different pieces staggered, some near, some far, some obscured by other pieces. Scott said when he was in Nine Miles, he felt like the hobbits from Lord of the Rings could have appeared at any time.




You would be on a road, and twist around a mountain, and you could not see out, past the next mountain in front of you. To me, the mountains look like huge, green, gumdrops.

The landscape changes from towns at the foot of the mountains, where the sun is shining brightly, and the sky a deep blue, to narrow roads hugging the sides of bauxite rich mountains, the soil crimson at times. We would pass by small villages, and fields, some with cabbages, some bananas.












As we were driving, Delroy pointed out the stone walls that serve as property line markers - he told us that the slaves built the walls, with rocks that they brought from the ocean. The walls went on and on. It made me sick to think of people being forced to build those walls.



We would be driving around those blind curves and that made me a little nervous. So I tell Delroy “I really like it when you lay on the horn around the curve, it is so nice and loud.” Well, he is happy that I noticed that he installed a semi-horn, so he is laying on it before every curve. I just wanted to make sure he gave a good warning, and so if I had to flatter him a bit to make sure he used the horn, why not?

Every once in a while on the trip, you would get this really strong odor of herb, and I would look around to see who was smoking – no one in sight.
I think we all determined that it was likely fields. Same smell that NapiHead talks about in her report, on her way to Nine Miles.

I wanted to post some pictures, which were really taken on the way back (taking it all in, remember?), but for the sake of continuity, and so we can get to Bob's, we'll pretend these were taken on the way up. OK? good.



Scott and I studied this photo - the outdoor kitchen, the water basins, the retaining wall, the people, the add on - all of it. This is one of my favorites. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]






We started on this road, and we watched it get smaller and smaller. It was the only way I had any idea where we had been.
