When it rains and floods those Little Bay dirt roads must become a bit slippery.
Being very flat, the water may seem to take lots of time to seep and run off.
What was the story on the hurricane experience, GB?
Little Bay has a striking resemblance to Treasure Beach and parts of St. Thomas parish on the extreme south east of Jamaica.
Those shirt collars and pant pockets always always need a scrub with the brush you see Cudge using and additional soap on the dirty area.
Pepper, heavy stuff like bed sheets and drapery all do well in a washer and shirts worn once and pants worn no more than twice...into the washer they go before the dirt pocks start to show...all for easier washing.
Whites..soak in bleach and scalded in the sun on a zinc sheet in de yard.

Spoken like a true yard man. And Q, lives in town.
Thats the feedback I get from many Jamaicans who have always used a wash pan in the past and(plastic tub) in the present.
But as we get more acclimatized and able to the uses of modern technology we tend not to be shy on such a wonderful convenience as a washer.
But please dont bother mention a drier. Hang drying on the line is quite up our alley and convenient too as long as the sun shineth.
True Pepper, there is open scepticism on washing machines and how efficient a load of soiled clothes can be washed.

THE ISLE OF MAN?
[/qb]
Inishmore in the Aran Isles, off Galway. Fisherman, we are....that's where Aran sweaters come from...each family has their own patterns, so bodies that wash ashore can be identified.
YOu know ive always admired the diligence to washing clothes and hanging them in the sun to dry...no easy task.. a full day operation sometimes.......
i always recount my timem hanging clothes in Port Antonio at Cultures.. and me spying out the window with him rearranging all my work.... i thought i did it just right.. but he felt differently...... i chuckled inside......
We did discuss the whole hand vs. machine wash....and it is clear that certain things would be done by hand....but towels, sheets, etc...can you imagine the time savings? All those kids, all those dirty bodies....etc....that is Dwayne doing his laundry, not Cudge...Dwayne likes to dress to the Nines, and takes care of his clothes carefully. I also think a machine will extend the life of clothing....I can tell you that our stuff took a beating under those brushes, and I did not think it was as clean....the girls are interested...they were excited I priced them, and we even talked brands....
The photographer Jill Uris published a book of pics taken all around Ireland some years ago...the title of the book, I've always felt, poignantly and accurately describes both Ireland and Jamaica....
"A Terrible Beauty"
would your family be from The Aran Islands?? edit: ooops!! just saw your post
wonderful story...what great lessons for your children..
