I just want to say that I was the mouthy one that yelled 'Hey Shug?', but only because everybody else was too chicken. About half an hour before you arrived we had another woman that we thought may be Shug but didnt respond to my taunts, erm I mean...Ooooowhee I'm drunk in that picture lol. Good times, good times.

Next year ya have to bring little miss! What a cutie.

Oh I love braids, but after getting them in the States and having to get some of my hair cut out just to remove them, I decided that my hair is too fine. Maybe I will try them again some time.

I can't seem to do much with it in this weather. Luckily the natural curls help a little to contain the flyaway, but the AC and fans just mess it up. But thanks anyway.

Great report indeed, i too am enjoying the writing and the pictures. Even though i was born and spent the first 14+ years of my life in Jamaica, i have never seen this part of the island.

i'll be heading over there soon; thanks again Suga!

On The Way To Mayfield (Saturday)

It tires me thinking about this section. Ya’ll asked for photos and I’m about to deliver. Somewhere I told you that I took over 900 photos. Well probably a fourth of them are from this one DAY!!! Being in the bush is not only magical for me, but spiritual. The farther away from the City you get, the more evident that God is all around you. Ineffible(nice SAT word huh) –with out a flaw. I know that life is rough wherever you go in Jamaica, but I somehow imagine…no hope….that being in this beautiful setting makes it somewhat easier. This is the part of the Caribbean that touches me and that I relish. I feel so disconnected to the Earth in the States. To live of the land and to respect it……I could go on and on. Just know that this is always the part that makes me feel more connected. When I was in Guyana( 75% of its land is unpopulated so bush for days and you’d see no people) it was when I was riding through the country that I got it and that I understood what I had been yearning for. So I’m gonna allow you to come on my journey up to Mayfield Falls. I know many of you have gone before, but did you really see-I mean did you really see what you passed on your way there. After all these photos if you can’t see it you never will.

So how did I start the day….Well guess what time I woke up. Yep 5:45. One thing that I didn’t tell you is that every morning when I got up at the crack of dawn, I was able to call home and talk to Little Miss before she left for school. She had me laughing every morning. Mommy when you get back ,are you gonna take me to Chucky Cheese and the library. Yes Little Miss. Every morning-the same thing. Then she would let me know if she got in trouble at school and if she had to sit in time out. I would tell her to behave herself because it’s not nice to disrespect the Sisters. She’d say ok, ask about Chucky Cheese again, I’d tell her I love her and then we’d hang up.

This morning I read more Oprah and loved the article about Tina Turner that was featured and wrote in my journal. After a couple of hours, Stacy and Tonya woke up. I asked if they wanted to go out to breakfast. They said no. I knew where I was going-Fatties to get some ackee. I walked across the street and waved hi to the boys. When I got inside there was one older man sitting down facing the wall enjoying his food. Another man was sitting down reading the paper waiting for his food. I liked today’s atmosphere. It transported me back to Andrew’s-waiting for the food and watching the runnings. I asked the man behind the counter if he had any ackee. He said that he only received a little ackee yesterday for this morning –so ackee done. I hope the despair didn’t show on my face (smile). I asked what else he had. I decided on saltfish with macaroni. He asked if it was to go. I said no and sat down. The TV was on, but I really didn’t hear it. I was kinda in my zone again. One thing that I am trying to get more comfortable with is eating out alone. I always have a permanent attachment to my hip (Little Miss). So, I was trying to get used to this different setting without having the ocean as my backdrop. Another younger guy walked in, ordered his food and he got into a heated debate with the man behind the counter. He sat down across from me and kinda grunted in my direction. I giggled in my head. So I’m looking at him. Wondering-what do you do? I figured he was kinda young because he took a big wad of money out and was flashing it and counting it at the table. I don’t know who he was trying to impress (rolleye). The food soon came out. It was delicious. The macaroni and saltfish were seasoned just right and the pumpkin in it was great. I can’t deal with all the dasheen and green banana and boiled dumplings on the side. After a week, that stuff just sticks to my insides and doesn’t let anything pass through. I clean my plate and went up front to pay. I talked to the man behind the counter and complimented him on the food. I told him that I would definitely be back. He told me to get there early, early to try to catch the ackee. I told him I’d try. I headed back over to the hotel and had an interesting conversation (that happened to repeat itself during the trip). A young man asks me could he talk to me. (I’m rolling my eyes in my head). Sure. So he tells me I’m so attractive, how could he get to know me. So I begin my debate.

Me-Well, why do you want to get to know me.
Him-Because I like your style. (BARF)
Me-Oh for real, well can you ask a question for me.
Him-Sure (Sucker doesn’t even see how I’m setting him up)
Me-Ok, I’m flattered that you like my style in all. Big ups to me, but what about all these beautiful Jamaican women
Him-Huh? What you mean?
Me-Well I’ve been here for a couple of days and been to JA before and there are so many beautiful Jamaican women. Why would you hit on a tourist that is only gonna be here for a couple of days?
Him(cricket sound heard in the background)

Yeah that’s right-Sugar squashes them like bugs. LOL.

But for real, it’s a question I want answered, but it’s a question that tells most gigolos forget it-this one will be too difficult.

I head back over the hotel after saying goodbye to the guy, can’t remember his name. Stacy and Tonya are just finishing up their cereal. We change into our bathing suites and pack our stuff for the ride. Dave gets there around 10:30. He come in and shakes all our hands. Soon we are on the way to Mayfield Falls. We stop at the Scotia and the cambio and then we leave town.

For this part of the trip, I’m going to give myself a break and let the photos tell the story. But here are some highlights. Dave took us to a pattie shop-OMG. That was the best pattie and cocobread that I have EVER tasted in my entire life (and I’ve tasted some good patties) The flakyness and how they brush the butter on and I swear they were fresh, fresh(my stomach just told me that it’s near lunch time.) I enjoyed the ride in the country so much. I feel like everything slows down. I could honestly ride this part of the trip with no music. I just enjoy the silence and the lull of the ride. Dave was a master at the road dance as are most taxi drivers in Jamaica. He pointed out all kinds of different fruits to us and even got out the car and climbed a fence to point some out. We saw pimento, ackee, breadfruit, cashews, mango, starapple, and coconuts to name a few. He also explained the planting process for sugar cane. I couldn’t stop taking picture. Dave could tell when I wanted to take a shot and would pull over so I could snap away. I really appreciated that. I could feel myself getting giddy as we climbed up higher into the mountains. I love how the air gets cleaner and fresher-if that’s possible. It’s just wonderful to look outside and everything around you is so alive.

This car and van were in front of us forever. I hoped that the van from Hedonism wasn’t going up to Mayfield. No indictment on anyone who stays there, but I felt that to much craziness would spoil the moment.
