Re: Negril-The Relaxation Trip
Back at Ms. Sonia’s
After we loaded back into the van, Dilly pointed out his house. His daughter came to the car and she was absolutely beautiful. He told us that she would be leaving to join her husband in the States. On the way back to town, Dilly pointed out more damage that Ivan caused. Huge stone boulders and small rubble everywhere, parts of hardware, a half of a refrigerator, remnants of a sea wall. The devastation just astounded me. We stopped at a hotel that was being refurbished by some American lawyers. It was beautiful. Gail saw the place and said-let’s stop. We all got out and walked around. It was situated right on the water. Painters were outside fixing the veranda. We looked inside and the bedrooms were beautiful. That resort will be really nice when it’s finished. When we got back into the van, Stacy asked if Dilly could drop us off at Ms. Sonia’s. She had a bag of clothes to donate plus we were hungry again. When we arrived at Ms. Sonia’s we told everyone good bye and plopped down into our(notice I said OUR) seats. Ms. Sonia’s son came out and took our order. There was another couple who was eating there. They told us it was there first time. Now that we are seasoned pros-we told them that they would just LOVE the food. Quick, quick our food came. I ordered a shrimp patty and of course it was phenomenal. It was also hot, hot outside so I was in my own personal heaven. Ms. Sonia came out and sat and talked with us. She has such a nice spirit. While we were talking the plant man came by to bring Ms. Sonia more plants. He had us all laughing-talking about how he lives like the woman. He told us that he stays at home and tends to his plants, does all the cooking and the laundry. He told us that he travels all over the country to get different varieties of plants. The ones that he brought for Ms. Sonia were beautiful. I remember that one of them had these gorgeous purple blooms. The plant man looks over at Stacy and asks if she is Haitian. She says no and laughs. He told us that he is good at telling where people are from. I ask him what am I-and he looks right at me and goes South American. Ok maybe he does have skills. We later got onto my favorite topic-living in the Caribbean. He had some good advice. He told me to be careful of who I ask advice from. He explained that like Ms. Sonia, he is a Negril original. He said that a lot of people in Negril were not raised here. He said that if I got advice from someone who grew up in Kingston, it wouldn’t be the same advice as someone who grew up in Negril.
