can anybody be a walker????.....why would anyone choose to stay home if they could be out walking?.....does this go on all over Jamaica?.....

As far as I know this little town in St. Bess is the only place that does it. My friends in Portland, Westmoreland, St. James, and Trelawny hadn't heard of it before either. However, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist there. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] It is a very local thing, very very local. The same people do it every year together. They all know each other through their familes and generations of living near one another in the town.

The only reason I wouldn't do it, would be because I don't want to exploit a local tradition with my tourist self. Although, I know I would be a welcome addition (Red's Uncle told me so [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] ) walking along side Red.

Image tourist after toursit joins in until it isn't a nice local thing anymore? Red Stripe sponsors it and you can't serve any beer other than Red stripe to the walkers, who all come from the States to dress in fake dread lock caps and walk around saying Yeah Mon!

I think you live there for years and it is something that is done as a community. Also, if you notice there are a lot more men out walking than woman. Not many women go out with the walkers, they are usually the girlfriend or wife of one of them men who has been walking for years.

Still it is nice to photograph and be a part of for a few minutes. If it weren't Red's family I'd never know about it and I wouldn't be able to share it with all of you.

I am still working on the video. What a pain it is. I can't upload it to google from work or home, it never seems to go all the way through before a message pops up telling me the transfer failed. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] All of the other websites change the quality of the video so much there really isn't any reason to post it. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70394-bawlout.gif[/img] I have to figure something out, the video is pretty funny... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Christmas Day Continued

Once the Walkers leave Red and I start getting ready to leave his Grandfathers house. An hour later we are in the car, headed to another part of St. Bess to see his Grandmother. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70371-jump.gif[/img] Now, let me tell you something about Red's Grandmother. I adore her. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70377-loveeyes.gif[/img] She and I are like 2 peas in a pod. We aren't there for 5 minutes before she and I are alone and she wants to know every single bit of gossip about this family member that I saw or met this trip. She is also sharing all kinds of neighborhood gossip with me. I love it. She makes no bones about it either, if you tell this woman something she makes sure that you know it won't be kept secret for long. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70388-shameonyou.gif[/img]

She decides she wants to show us off to her neighbor. She says she talks about Red and I all the time and the neighbor would never forgive her if she didn't get to meet us. We start the walk down the road to the neighbors house. It takes about 10 minutes before we are there and I get to meet Lila. She is sitting in a chair in the back yard, disabled and unable to walk. I hug her, tell her Merry Christmas and engage in some polite chit chat. She turns to Red and says, Yuh haf yuhself a nice likkle wife. He smiles and agrees. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] We head back to Grandma's house and by the time we get there, Red's mother is there. She drove all the way from Kingston to spend Christmas with her mom. She wasn't alone, she had brought a friend, Nicole, with her.

Mrs. Red and her friend Nicole were just getting out of the car when we walked up. Nicole is someone who went to school with Mrs. Red and is now living in Canada, she was in Jamaica to be with her family for the holidays. Nicole is 51 years old and has newborn twins, named Shimmy and Shake.

Well, Grandma is ALL over this. As soon as she and I are alone she turns to me and says "A menapause baby dem." She is also telling me that there is no way the babies father isn't a Chiney, she wanted me to rest assured that she would find out. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img] Red and I walk to the car to get some of the food Mrs. Red prepared out from the back seat and by the time I come back Grandma has the whole thing figured out. The babies father is white. She is pleased to finally have all the pieces of the puzzle put together. I just love this woman. She reminds me of my own Grandmother who is from Tennessee and prides herself on being a Hill Billy. She is also from a small town in the country and has always known everything there is to know about all of her neighbors. I have a feeling that my Grandmother and Red's Grandmother could sit and chat for ages.

Nicole is friendly and pleasant to be around. I admire her strength, traveling to Jamaica with twins by herself. She has a lot of energy and from looking at her, you wouldn't think she was a day over 30. Her babies are adorable as well. They seemed to really like Red. I attribute that to his big ears and nose, what kid wouldn't smile at that. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

your sensitivity, BB, is remarkable. Thanks for the above. I'm from St. Bess, and am not aware of that tradition either, so as you say, it is probably quite, quite local. It's sounds great, though, and I'm glad I got to know about it through your report.

I also love the while story of you walking about with Red's grandmother. It feels very country and very grounding, and my best times in Jamaica are when I've done just that, talk and walk around to and with the elders.
