Nice - celebration of your Grandmothers Life - thanks for sharing these.

OK - first off - forgive my ignorance with my question ... but - many years ago ~ before I really began to have ties to JaJa and pay attention to my whereabouts - our bartender took my family and me from Negril to Ochi via the coastal route on the way to Ochi and cross country on the return trip. I just viewed a map for the location of the Cockpit Country ... in the early 90's - would there have been roads to carry one from Ochi to Negril that would have passed near the Cockpit area??

I remember SPECTACULAR visuals of the country side we passed thru ... MUST make that trek again one day ...

Again - thanks and looking forward to whatever else you will share.

Thank you all for the condolences, she always reminded me that it was cause of me dat shi mek har fuss chrip come a Canada, and how shee fuss hold me.

Laurel the Cockpits are huge they way I go is roun by falmouth cominh from mobay. Through Ochi yuh guh troo Duncans. Roads have been there for hundreds of years, some dem as yuh cyan see a cobblestone road but if ppl up deh some fawm a road updeh. My grandmadda has only had a phone fe bout 6 years now. There was no phone service updeh before dat. These parts of the cockpits are the only ones I know, wehn yuh look pan a map yuh si how huge de place is. They've even found the yelow boa up there and no one believe seh Jamaica ha dem snake deh.

So mi kno de cockits weh stawt from de bottom a ochi up to Christiana which is higher den Spring Garden weh mi deh when mi di deh. MI always mek sure fi bring mi long sleves cah it get cole a night time.

nice pics, dahjah. sorry to hear about your granny, but am glad you got a chance to go to the funeral and reconnect with your roots.

the kids and i spent a day up in the cockpits this past summer, and it is indeed a special place. we went up as far as a place called Ramsgoat Bottom (?). the road dem up deh narrow fi true. in one instance, we had to pass a truck that was up there for yamsticks (we speculated), and it was so close, i basically had to shut down my mind and drive, caw mi nain waan ting bout scraping the truck nor falling over the precipice.

mi sorry you picture dem colour get mess up but you have some nice ones still. mi love di pic of di house, and of the ras dem by di gate, and my guy a go a grung.

There's a rivah bahine de house weh when wi did likkle we use fi bade een deh but now de wata is so low yuh cyaan duh dat een deh again.
