wanda, the first time i saw those plains (about 18 years ago), i was rendered speechless. it was just after Gilbert, in November I think and we were headed into Pike, but from the St. Elizabeth side, going through Balaclava. the recent rains had made the plains a lush and beautiful green - not the orangey shade in this pic which was taken in the dry season. i had never seen anything like it before in Jamaica, and would never have believed this kind of scenery would be there. and i grew up near there, go figure.

Jamaica is a land of great secret beauty, in addition to the usual well-known ones.

Hello mountaingal,

Thank you for opening up your heart to us.
These pictures are the real Jamaica and
the ones taken in StBess are so vivid.

If your lovely daughters are wanting to go back to JAM
then please, beg borrow and steal to try and make the trip.

Time runs out very fast and next thing you know they will not want to go back
with you because of studies, many boyfriends and other interests in general.

Before you know it the moment has passed.
You lost that chance.
One that can never be recouperated again.

Never feel regret for things that you have done
But only for things that you do not do.

The folks I know up there are friends of my mother. Their son had to come to Toronto for some heart surgery when he was a little boy, and my mother billeted them (it was a community effort, i think through the church, mi no memba the whole story). Anyway, it's been 20 years or more and our families keep in touch. The young man now owns his own truck and recently became a father.

It was a bit of an adventure getting there, because they were not expecting me. I made a wrong turn and ended up a strip of road that had precipice on both sides, then had to do a 3-pt turn to get off it. my heart was in my mouth, the stress nearly kill me. But i picked up a young lady who lived near there and she directed me most of the way.

My favritest memory of Pike? on the way down, a little puppy ran across the road and I braked sharply so I wouldn't run it over. and some old men beside the road actually praised me for braking. i thought for sure they would mock me, you know how ppl treat dog in Jamaica. i was very comforted at that sign of soft feeling if you know what I mean.

I like Pike. but it so far from everyting. and you house haffi build pon stilts fi deal wid all di hill hill.
</div></div>As soon as I pass Coleyville, I feel like I'm "home". It is a challenging place to live indeed, which explains why all the youth I grew up with have left. I always feel sadness about Pike's state of abandonment.

Interestingly enough, my mom grew up in Pike, while my dad is from Tyre just on the other side of Hector's River, yet they met each other in England.

Magic, I've climbed up Mt. Denham and been to the top of the tower. The view from up their is breathtaking. Apparently the GG visited once and came by helicopter - that way he wouldn't see how bad the roads are!

Lovely trip report and photos, mountaingal. Your daughters are beautiful and like someone else said upthread, good on them for keeping their hair natural.
