I did not record a picture or video of the following moment so my words will have to suffice, had I gone and taken a pic the moment would have been spoiled so I exercised judgment and went with the flow.

So my first night of the rock, one of my uncles and his best friend stops by at 12 pm and takes us to eat jerk pork and chicken, most places close down early due to the crime situation be it imagined or real, so we were skeptical but he knows the owner of the place and instantly when we arrive and they recognize my uncle the tables get turned back over and cold stripes appear out of nowhere, I was drinking Heineken for some reason but my Grandfather, pops, uncle and friend all had red stripes, on the third beer I suddenly sat back and starting to relax, finally looked up at the stars trying to find the big dipper, the food then arrived. It was a little late as they had to restart the fire and we had jerk pork and knuckles and jerk chicken. The beer was starting to kick in, and a small car parked in front is blaring some wicked tunes. The place was not empty the owner and his friends were cleaning up plus a teenager who lived in the house next door was helping.

All of a sudden a car pulls up, a medium built man with dreads walks over to the gate and tells the owner of the car something, the guy appears to be shocked and waves the guy off. The dread walks back over to his car pull something out of his glove compartment and walks back over to us, he turns to the owner exchange words and the owner stop the music, take out his cd and put the stranger’s cd in to car. It’s the exact same songs but with no lyrics just the riddim …it appears the stranger is actually the real singer and start singing a tune instantly, the whole place crowds around the guy.

This guy proceeds to give the best 30 minute concert I have ever witnessed, each song was introduced to us, why he wrote it, which song he was asked to perform at Bogle’s funeral and told us he just arrived from San Francisco that very night from a concert heard his songs and had to stop and give us the real deal. This man had no microphone from what I could tell but he was crystal clear, rode the riddim like a seasoned vet and had us cracking up every time he reached a part of the cd he did not like he told the owner to “dash whe dat”…

I am convinced Jamaicans have to be the most talented people in the world per square mile, he wraps up his concert, respect is said all around and runs back to his car and is gone. I did not even get his name however, the owner of the place walks over to us and quite seriously states ” being out here like this makes us all venerable”…we know instantly what he means and settle up the bill. I am sad that this is how the night had to end, but go to bed humming the small bit of the only song I can remember. …another youth born again.

that's the S.A.T- the sad assed truth. when you leave a place seems like these days you have to leave it with a quickness and make sure no fanfare and long goodbyes.
