I think one of the visual aspects of your performances that I appreciate most... is the mode of dress - adds that bit of class and style one doesn't see with the newer artists / performers coming up in recent years.


Do you find that the 'visual effect' allows for a more marketable 'product'(although the talent and quality of show also speaks volumes)

By the way, Sidney Thorpe, our blind genius keyboard player, is joining us from his room so you can ask him questions directly also. We are going to be using 3 logins for the chat since Fab 5 has 8 members (including juinor who now mainly acts as engineer on tour) but who is an original member and great guitarist!

mi seh is a good ting nobaddy can't see mi chroo di computa because mi have wan big grin pan mi face weh a light up di place.

First encounter with the band was at age 6 or 7 when you guys were practicing and I was visiting my mother's friend who lived next door. I peeked over and di tall light skin one gave me an LP. Lawd the only thing mi neva di wid di LP was bade wid it. All school mi wanted to carry it go.

so true...

my question - what made you go the soca route? up till that time, i think only byron lee and the dragoffears were into that music as jamaicans...all the other soca people were trinis or otherislanders...

WOW! Nuff things to answer. Welcome to all. Actually it is scheduled for 2, but we just got on early. Big up SistahD for inviting us.

Germany: Wow that's good memory. Fab 5 toured Germany in 1969-70 before we were Fab 5, along with marcia Griffiths as "The Reggaes" and it was an exciting time, Rocksteady was King and reggae was the new kid on the block. It is really a proud feeling to know that you were part of creating such an important world music.

Interestingly all should note that while other countries big up themselves and beat their chests it is Jamaica which has produced 4 world music beats (5 if you count rock steady) - namely Mento, Ska, Reggae, and Dancehall.

Music must evolve, so we have to go with the flow, but the msuic nowadays has far less muciand far more dependancy on riddim and throw away lyrics that we woudllike, tahnkfully the electronic thing which almostsaw the death of live music (and especially live drumming) has come full circle and people are grooving to libve bands again.


As far as a book is concerned it is in discussion, as my brother who works with us is a publsihed writer (he co-wrote) Merlene Ottey's biography and so it could happen soon.

Regarding the visuals, yes we think they are important and try to dress to fit the mood. Dressing for stage is just now becoming a reality of jamaican performances (maybe thanks to msuci videos) and the deejays and others are startuing to understand its importance.

Re the soca thing! It was a commercial decision as we wanted to show that we could do any music and do it right. Plus we saw a potential for Soca in Jamaica at the time. I think we manged to achieve that good things with our Soca, what you think?
