NO Evan, mi neva call him ah "Token". Bush started to tie his hands which reduced him to a mere figure-head after ah while. He was not allowed to give his opinion or advice after a while, Because Bush saw him as being in opposition. That is frustrating to someone who genuinely wanted to do the right thing. He was more popular around the world and had more respect than his boss, and that cannot be allowed.

He would not quit during the first term, because he is a soldier and a soldier does not desert his post no matter what. However, the second term was an opportunity for him to exit gracefully, even though Bush wanted him to stay on. Bush heeds to have, so called, minorities in his admin. to give the appearance of reaching out to Blacks, Latinos and others.

Colin Powerll's resignation come as NO surprise to me. I was thinking that Condie would resign too..is this what this means, wanting to return to Caly-fore-nye-aye?

I hope she does, now they can sleep at nights without having to worry about explaining nonsense...if oono get mi driff....they will be definitely healthier and most surely will live a much saner life.

Resignation submitted Friday to Bush

WASHINGTON - Colin Powell has resigned as secretary of state, becoming the latest member of President Bush’s Cabinet to depart for his second term, sources told NBC News on Monday.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Powell told his senior staff early Monday that that he had submitted his resignation on Friday. He plans to stay on until a successor is confirmed, they said.

The White House was preparing an announcement to confirm Powell's resignation. According to one official, who spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, Powell expects that his departure date will be sometime in January. It was not immediately clear whether he will leave before Bush's second inauguration on Jan 20.

Most of the speculation on a successor has centered on U.N. Ambassador John Danforth, a Republican and former U.S. senator from Missouri.

Powell has had a controversial tenure in the chief of state's job, reportedly differing on some key issues at various junctures with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Powell, however, has generally had good relations with his counterparts around the world, although his image standing has been strained by the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

Powell, a former chairman of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff, led the Bush administration argument at the United Nations for a military attack to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, arguing a weapons-of-mass-destruction threat that the administration could never buttress.

Normal schedule:

Powell will go about his usual schedule and will continue at full speed until a successor is named and in place, a senior administration told the AP.

Powell was scheduled to meet later Monday with Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and was to attend a meeting of Asian in Chile on Wednesday and a mutinational conference on Iraq next week.

Word of his impending departure came shortly after Pentagon officials said there was a "strong possibility" that the secretary of state will visit the West Bank next week and meet with Israeli leaders and the new Palestinian leadership.

In addition to Powell, Attorney General John Ashcroft and Commerce Secretary Don Evans have announced their resignations.

Sources said Monday that Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham will announce his resignation soon. Administration officials also told The Associated Press on Friday that Education Secretary Rod Paige intends to leave his Cabinet position.

it's SOP, I believe, for an administration to lose some of its old cabinet on re-election, as mandates shift and new talents are required. part of this has to do with what favours were promised before and during the election. i think both Powell and Rice would have expected this and resigned to clear the way for whoever now has to be rewarded with their posts.

rumsfeld should go, too.

Until Mr Powell states his reason for retiring I will reserve my real opinion.

Meanwhile it isn't beyond me that he is just tired of the pressures of public life and just want to live out his last years with family. He did quite a stint in the military and could have retired from public service then but probably thought he had more to offer. He was even touted to run for the presidency, something he refused outright. All and all, this man is an accomplished states man an I would appreciate fellow boardites to pay him the honor he deserves.

all of what you said is true and why he is so well respected.. but yuh seemed to figet seh di fact still remains im was working wid a bunch a croonies up to no good. (well I know you doan tink so ..but...)
