I am reading it, I should say re-reading it as I read it a long time ago. so what is the structure for the discussion? Cause I don't want to come in here and see discussions on parts I haven't read yet an oonu give it away [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] ! Maybe we can do it by chapters (actually I just look and it is in sections Part 1, 2 etc.) so we can say on whatever date we will start discussing Part 1. Just a suggestion.

well mi done read it todeh, anytime unu been ready, we can start. I raise the point again like seemiyah that we should have some basic guidelines to discuss the book in a manner that will not be incoherent and disjointed.

For example -

Who was your favourite character and why?

What are some of the liberties taken by the author regarding Jamaica's geography and historical events. (mi see couple)

Are Jamaicans really so color struck?

Were/Is the jamaican black majority trully the cannon fodder of the ruling class from 1600 to 1981 in contemporary Jamaica or something more sinister?

What are the major themes?
Exploitation
Betrayal
infidelity
Madness
Sex
Incest
Religion
Race
Brutality
Politics
Anarchy

Magic it tek two nights between 10pm to 1am (Sat and Sun), mi noh know what kinda a coconut head yu got but 321 pages is light reading dat. Nowadays plane noh fly itself anyway, just put it pon auto pilot and finish the book [img]/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]

in addition to vannie's suggestions about religious themes, we can also look at the cultural peculiarities in the jamaicanmother-daughter relationship.

mi aggo try find time fi read di book a nite time, mi just get it from library yesterday.

the cultural peculiarity of mother/dawta relationship is powerful throughout the book and there is a single instance that brings it allllll to fruition...the peculiarity that is....along of the line of another post we tawked in the other day MG....ways some parents express love...their inability to do so in the ways we have come to see as the expected....an that brings to play juss wat u say, cultural and u have to think of which culture does it ape....fabulous book...i have always thought it would do well as a part of any school's literature syllabus
