You dont think it is relevant to the discussion against the backdrop of the political volience and the time period in Jamaica true history is set. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70402-thinking.gif[/img]...If I offended you I am sorry, but I thought I would throw it out there for the group to discuss and think about why the author may have been able to capture the frightining events of that period..cause I was having flashbacks of the 81 elections reading that book and mi was barely four that time.

For people not familair with Claudis Massop, you have seen his face many times, he was the last person to walk away from the iconic picture of Bob Marley and Seaga and Manley holding hands at the famous peace concert, he was also in the bus in Bob Marleys video Jammin rubbing his beard.

He was also a strong man and enforcer for the JLP and close friend of Edward Seaga, Dudley Thompson the father of the author was Min of Security when he was gunned down unarmed on his way back from caymanas park, I may have offended evan when I stated Seaga was directly involved, I apologize, he was never found guitly of anything, but Massop was starting to get too big from his breeches so to speak and wanted to also run for office using Seagas constituent. Just some background to what Evan and I are talking about.

no. i took umbrage re including Margaret re the writing of a book on the subject...she is an individual separate and apart from har fada....dats all..her book is a work of fiction...her position at an Ivy league institution is evidence of her own merit, separate from his...an face it he is a brilliant man...i love dat likkle short man..he agreed to do an online intaview here on the site but it was never set up...dat was awhile ago...

I was born in Jamaica, West Indies, and left when I was nineteen to attend Barnard College in New York. I received my B. A. in English (with a specialization in Drama) from Barnard College/Columbia University and my Ph.D. in English from the City University of New York where I did my dissertation on V.S. Naipaul. Since 1990, I’ve been teaching literature and creative writing at Wellesley College. My first novel, The True History of Paradise, was published by Dutton in 1999, and my son, Ben, was also born that year. I’ve published short fiction, essays, reviews, and interviews in Callaloo, Elle, Journal of Commonwealth Literature, Graham House Review, and The Washington Post. My first screenplay, Photo Finish, about a Jamaican-American athlete, was sold to Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions in 1994 (now Harpo-Disney). The True History of Paradise was selected as one of six finalists for the Dublin International IMPAC Award. It is now available in paperback, and it has been translated into German. I’m currently working on my second novel.

Special Interests: Fiction writing, screenwriting, film, Victorian and Modern British fiction and poetry, Caribbean and British colonial history, postcolonial literature and film (especially related to the Caribbean and Africa), and Jamaican music.

Books/writers of special interest (the ones I read again and again): Edith Wharton, Virginia Woolf, Thomas Hardy, Paule Marshall, Ben Okri, Jean Rhys, William Shakespeare (especially the tragedies), Joyce’s Dubliners, Thackeray’s Vanity Fair, Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Yeats, Wallace Stevens, the King James Bible.

Courses I’ve taught include: English 203 “Short Narrative,” Writing 125 "The Story and its Writer," English 204 “The Art of Screenwriting” English 384“'Outside England’: Africa—Fact, Fiction, & Myth” (an intensive study of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness in relation to other literary, visual, and journalistic impressions of Africa from 1899 to the present), and English 380 “Authors: Thomas Hardy.” In Spring 2005, I will be teaching a new course, English 385, “The Short Story: History and Technique.”
