Jamaican Diaspora South Florida organizes hurricane aid

The Jamaica Consulate General along with the Diaspora Foundation Advisory Board are coordinating emergency preparations for Jamaica in light of Hurricane Dean now approaching the Caribbean region.

Meanwhile, drop off points have been set up at several churches including the Holy Family Episcopal Church in North Miami, Kendall Community Church in Kendall, and the Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church in Pembroke Pines.

In the interim, persons interested in making donations can make checks payable to the Jamaica Consulate General (Hurricane Relief) and mailed to the office at 25 Southeast Second Avenue, Suite 609, Miami, FL 33131.

Donations should include a list of critically needed items such as non-perishable food items, batteries, flashlights, first aid kits, battery operated radios and bottled water.

For further information, persons can call the Consulate office at 305-374-8431, extensions 223 and 232.

Diaspora Advisory Board member, Marlon Hill has urged other Jamaican communities as well as members of community associations throughout the Diaspora to be on the alert in their specific communities to collaborate effectively as preparations are put in place.

I'm supposed to land in Kingston tomorrow night at 10pm...

Not looking good. Spoke to someone in Kingston, they we're pretty relaxed about things, the airport had no plans in place earlier, Air Jamaica said hurrucane - what hurricane!

In the great scheme of things, who cares if my flights canceled. But to me this sounds serious, I just hope the damage can be limited...

Well you'll have to play it by ear.

If I were you I'd go standby on an earlier flight.
If by tomorrow morning it looks like the storm will come they will try to get the planes off the island and fly them to Ft. Lauderdale. So either the last flight might cancel, or they fly it and then send the plane back empty to FL. That's if you're on AirJ.

Food For The Poor readies for Hurricane Dean
In preparation for Hurricane Dean, the first major hurricane of the 2007 storm season, Food For The Poor put its emergency preparedness operations into high alert today. The largest provider of aid to the Caribbean and Central America stands ready to assist should disaster strike.

HURRICANE WATCH NOW IN EFFECT FOR JAMAICA AS HURRICANE DEAN REACHES CATEGORY 4 STRENGTH
NEWS RELEASE #2

ISSUED ON: Friday, August 17, 2007 at 8:15 p.m.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has been advised by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica that a Hurricane Watch is now in effect for Jamaica as Hurricane Dean, the first hurricane of the 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season, continues to move towards the island.

Hurricane Dean is moving towards the west near 31 km/h (19 mph) and this general motion is expected to continue with a slight decrease in forward speed during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 215 km/h (135 mph), making Dean a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Further strengthening is expected during the next 24 hours.

In response to the threat posed by Hurricane Dean , the ODPEM has fast-tracked its emergency response activities. The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) will be activated on Saturday, August 18, from 9:00 a.m. Persons can contact the NEOC at 930-0660-1

Evacuations

The ODPEM is advising all persons who live along the coastline or in low-lying and flood-prone areas to be on high alert to evacuate once the order is given.



§ Finalize your evacuation plans, making sure you know of all available safe routes out of your communities.

§ Find out the locations of the closest shelters to your home.

§ If you do not plan to stay at public shelters make early arrangements with family members and/or friends to stay with them if your house is not strong enough to withstand hurricane conditions.



The ODPEM will provide the public with information on those specific areas to be evacuated, once this has been deemed necessary.



Vulnerable Community Members

All community members are reminded to keep an eye out for vulnerable persons in your community such as the elderly and/or disabled persons living on their own and pregnant women. Notify your local authorities – the Parish Council or the ODPEM – if such persons are living in your community and will need assistance.



Businesses

All business owners are encouraged to give staff adequate time to make their own family/personal arrangements to prepare for Hurricane Dean . Business owners are also encouraged to initiate their own preparations, if they have not already done so.



Shelters

If you believe your home cannot offer adequate protection against the winds from a hurricane or floodwater, plan to leave before the impact. Under the national Shelter Programme, government-owned schools are designated as shelters. Information about shelters in your parish can be obtained from the Parish Disaster Coordinator (PDC) at Parish Councils islandwide or from the ODPEM. Find out the safest possible route to the nearest shelter. The following items can be taken to a shelter: blankets; flashlights and extra batteries; extra clothing; medication; 24 hours supply of non-perishable food and water – do not forget to take with you a can opener; toiletries such as soap, toilet tissue and sanitary napkins; infant necessities such as diapers and baby food; disposable cups, plates and forks; a portable radio and batteries; and a First Aid Kit.

In the meantime the public is reminded to:



1. Stay tuned to the news and weather reports and listen out for emergency instructions, if any should be given.

2. Thoroughly check the roof of your house, hurricane shutters, hooks and latches and repair where necessary.

3. Have your emergency supplies, such as tinned goods and candles, in place.

4. Prune trees that hang over your homes and other buildings if Hurricane Dean should impact the island.

5. Get extra plastic bags and sheets of plastic to protect your important documents, paintings, equipment and furniture from getting wet.

6. Be ready for quick evacuation if you live in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

7. All small craft operators, including fishers on the cays and banks, should by now be arriving in port to start preparations for safe harbour.

The progress of Hurricane Dean will continue to be closely monitored by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and updates will be released to the public as soon as new information has been gathered.

JAMAICA AND THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

This Travel Warning is being issued to urge U.S. citizens to carefully consider the risks of travel to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands at this time due to the threat posed by Hurricane Dean. The Department of State has authorized the departure of non-emergency personnel and eligible family members of the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica. The storm is predicted to pass over Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on August 19.

The U.S. Embassy in Kingston will be available over the weekend for emergency American Citizens Services, but may be forced to suspend operations without notice. U.S. citizens in areas likely to be impacted by Hurricane Dean who do not have access to adequate and safe shelter should consider departing until the storm has passed while commercial flights are still available. Seating capacity on commercial flights is extremely limited. Flights into and out of Kingston and Montego Bay international airports, and the Grand Cayman Airport may be suspended at any time. If staying in Jamaica or the Cayman Islands, U.S. citizens are urged to locate shelter, monitor media reports, and follow all official instructions. Visitors to Jamaica or the Cayman Islands should be familiar with their hotel or cruise ship evacuation plans, policies, or procedures. Please see the Caribbean Public Announcement regarding hurricane season dated August 16, 2007, on the Department’s website at http://www.travel.state.gov.

U.S. citizens should carry their travel documents (i.e. U.S. Passport, Birth Certificate, picture ID’s, etc.) with them at all times or secure them by placing them in a safe, waterproof location. Additionally, all American citizens in the area are reminded to stay in contact with friends and family in the United States to keep them apprised of their current whereabouts.

Americans living or traveling in Jamaica or the Cayman Islands are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov.
