UWI awarding honorary degree to Observer columnist John Maxwell

Veteran journalist and Observer columnist John Maxwell is among 16 people on whom the University of the West Indies (UWI) will confer honorary degrees during graduation ceremonies on all UWI campuses later this year.
Maxwell. has published over 1,500 columns
Maxwell, who writes a weekly column titled 'Common Sense' in the Sunday Observer, will be awarded the degree DLitt honoris causa, the UWI said in a news release posted on its website.
Maxwell, a journalist since the 1950s, has published over 1,500 columns and has been interviewed regularly by local and international media houses as an expert in his field.
"He has been an icon in public education, especially in areas such as decolonisation, democratic governance and related topics," the UWI said in
its release.
He is known for his unwavering commitment to the protection of the environment and is a passionate advocate of Haiti.
In addition to Maxwell, SuperClubs chairman John Issa and Gleaner chairman and managing director Oliver Clarke will receive Doctor of Laws degrees,
Other awardees will be:
. publisher and cultural historian Dr Anne Walmsley will receive a DLitt;
. scholar and historian Professor Colin A Palmer, a DLitt;
. Sir Frederick Ballantyne, governor general of St Vincent and the Grenadines, a Doctor of Sciences degree;
. entrepreneur Paul Bernard Altman, managing director of Altman Real Estate, will receive an LLD;
. Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford, former prime minister of Barbados, will be awarded an LLD;
. Professor Zelma Edgell, is expected to receive a DLitt;
. Yesu Persaud, founder and chairman of Demerara Bank Ltd, is to receive an LLD ;
. petroleum industry pioneer, Robert B Riley, will receive an LLD;
. theatre artist and poet Christopher Laird will receive a DLitt;
. environmental activist Angela Cropper will receive a DLitt. She has recently been appointed assistant secretary-general and executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme;
. biographer, Professor Arnold Rampersad, will receive the DLitt;
. social worker and academic Dr Peggy Antrobus will receive an LLD; and
. Dunstan St Omer, the artist responsible for designing the National Flag of Saint Lucia in 1967, will receive a DLitt;
According to the UWI, the awarding of the honorary degrees is part of its "ongoing campaign to shine light on those who tirelessly contribute to the growth of the region".
