Pressure is being placed on National Security Minister Senator Dwight Nelson to comment on reports that the American authorities have requested that an area leader in a stronghold of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) be extradited to the United States (US).
There are reports that the strongman, who has significant ties with the governing party, is wanted in the US on various criminal charges.
The People's National Party (PNP) says the gravity of the situation calls for an official statement from the National Security Minister.
According to Peter Bunting, Opposition spokesman on National Security, the PNP will be closely watching the Government's handling of the matter:
"I've tried to call the minister to ascertain the details around it but I've been unsuccessful but really, I'm calling on him to make a statement to the country so we can know whether this is a rumour or if it's accurate. If it is accurate, then it's going to be a test of this administration's political will," he said.
A senior police source confirmed in an interview with RJR News that that the strongman is wanted by the US authorities.
He told RJR News that an order was issued for his extradition.
However, up to late Wednesday night it had not been signed by Jamaican officials.
The police source did not disclose the criminal allegations which have been made against the JLP activist.
