Dear Editor,

If the Dudus debacle has highlighted one thing, it is that Jamaica is unsure of itself as an autonomous nation. On the one hand, there is Bruce Golding who refuses to sign the extradition request because doing so would be an affront not only to Mr Coke's constitutional rights, but also to Jamaica's sovereignty. To hand over Mr Coke in such a manner, and at such a time, would be shameful surrender to US dictate, at the expense of Jamaica's ability to think and decide for itself.

On the other hand, there is the larger Jamaican population Their grievance comes not from an alleged attack on the island's sovereignty but is, interestingly enough, concerned with Golding's challenge to the sovereignty of the United States. Jamaican citizens are worried about the ramifications of standing up to the US. To be frank, they are worried about their visas, and in the reality of America's great power status, they have every reason to be.

Yet, the question remains, if the real controversy surrounds the future of US-Jamaica relations, and not the violation by a foreign power of the Jamaican Constitution and Jamaican rights, then where does that leave our right to self-determination? In the scheme of things, where do we truly feel at home: Jamaica House or the White House? Whom are we trying to please? Our neighbours or ourselves?

Judging by this affair, it would seem that Jamaica's dependency on America goes beyond the economic realm. It is a dependency so strong that it encroaches upon the island's self-sufficiency, self-rule, self-government, or - to put it simply - the island's &quot;self&quot;. Delaying Mr Coke's extradition is a futile attempt to deny what the rest of the nation seemingly already knows: Jamaica cannot survive while out of favour with the US because the island is not a sovereign nation.

FORMER national security minister Dudley Thompson believes that the ongoing impasse between Jamaica and the United States over the extradition of Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke is hurting this north Caribbean island badly, internationally.

Ambassador Thompson, who served as Jamaica's envoy to several African countries, including Nigeria, Namibia and Ghana, said that Prime Minister Bruce Golding had his back against the wall in not acting fast enough in the 'Dudus' affair, adding that further delays in settling the matter could have far-reaching effects.

&quot;It is harming Jamaica's image internationally in a huge way,&quot; </span> the 93-year-old retired politician, lawyer and diplomat told the Observer during an interview in Kingston.

&quot;We can't imagine up to now the harm that is being done. I do not think that when it started out that anybody on either side thought that it would have stretched out to such a very deep wound; Jamaica has been wounded,&quot; said Thompson, who is now based in Florida, United States.

Known as the 'Burning Spear' -- having successfully represented numerous local, regional and international figures in his time in the courtroom, among them the 1952 defence of Kenyan Jomo Kenyatta, who later became president of that African country -- Ambassador Thompson chided State officials for allowing the 'Dudus' extradition matter to drag on.

&quot;I should not think that the damage is irreparable, but I do feel that a matter as sensitive as this, at a time like this, should have been handled much quicker, not delayed over such a long period of time.

&quot;Every delay lays the onus upon us in Jamaica to state why we have to take more action. Again, it depends on whether or not you are working on the spirit of the (Extradition) Act, or the actual legal, day-by-day, word-by-word, letter-by-letter interpretation of the Act,&quot; he said.

&quot;Such a matter should have had quicker and more transparent exhibition to the public. What I don't like is the 'you told me, I told him' position that exists today. A lot of finger-pointing is taking place. A change of attitude in this approach does seem to suggest that we didn't start from a very strong position. It gives me the impression that there are a lot of things still to be revealed and a lot of names are being covered up,&quot; said Thompson, who also expressed concerns about the Manatt, Phelps &amp; Phillips issue.

&quot;...What is the source of the money that was paid? (to the US-based law firm Manatt, Phelps &amp; Phillips); who paid the cheque? Those are questions that should come out straightforward; it shouldn't take much time to say that,&quot; Thompson said.

The law firm said that the Jamaica Government contracted it to act on its behalf in regard to extradition matters, a claim that the Government has denied.

Thompson, in the meantime, remained fixed in his views that Tivoli Gardens -- the pro-Jamaica Labour Party community in West Kingston -- was like a kingdom unto itself.

&quot;My political history has always felt that Tivoli Gardens is a fiefdom on its own. Tivoli Gardens, also from my own personal relationship, has always been a separate and different part of Jamaica.

&quot;Golding being prime minister and representing that area should be able to come right out and clarify that situation. I doubt whether that is being done.

&quot;He is under pressure, but he can always get out of trouble by telling the truth. The truth is the best prerogative in the world,&quot; said Thompson, a Rhodes Scholar produced by Mico (University) College, which honoured him last weekend.

Regarded as one of the toughest defence lawyers in the history of Jamaica's legal system, Thompson is also widely remembered in his stint as national security minister in the 1970s for his words, &quot;No angels died at Green Bay&quot;, following the killing of five civilians by army rifles in St Catherine in 1978.

Ten men from the Jamaica Labour Party stronghold of Southside in Central Kingston went to the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) shooting range in the Port Henderson area, with the promise of jobs as bodyguards and drivers at the then princely wage of $300 a week, when five of them were shot dead and the other five escaped.

Four of the five had criminal records, including Norman &quot;Gutto&quot; Thompson, a former Santos Football Club and Jamaica representative.

Ten JDF soldiers, who were either charged with murder or conspiracy to murder, were freed in February 1982 by a jury in the Manchester Circuit Court. This came after a coroner's jury in 1978 found that persons conspired to kill the men, who were transported to the range in two Jamaica Red Cross ambulances.

JDF personnel testified at the trial that the men went to Green Bay to collect illegal guns and were killed by soldiers, after they fired at soldiers.

West Kingston strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke and Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller have been named as defendants in the motion filed by the Government on the controversial handling of an extradition request from the United States for Coke.

The motion, which names Minister of Justice and Attorney General Dorothy Lightbourne as the claimant, was filed last week Thursday. Three 'presidents' are listed as defendants in the claim. They are Coke, who answers to the name 'President' or 'Prezi'; Simpson Miller, who is the president of the People's National Party; and, Joseph Mayer Matalon, president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ). Matalon is named as a defendant on behalf of the PSOJ.

Lightbourne is asking the court to declare what she can take into account in deciding to issue the authority to proceed in extradition matters.

The hearing has been set for May 5.

Coke is named as a defendant because he is the subject of the request and so would be an interested person in the pro-ceedings. The other defendants are named because of views expressed on the issue.

The Government is contending that the United States (US) illegally obtained wiretap evidence that was being used to prosecute Coke.

There have been heated debates since the US issued its request in August last year for Coke's extradition. He is wanted on charges of drug and firearm trafficking.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has previously said in Parliament that the Government would only sign the request if the US was able to provide further and better particulars indicating why Coke should be sent there to stand trial.

The prime minister said recently that he decided to send the matter to court in the interest of the public.

Prominent constitutional lawyer Dr Lloyd Barnett is representing the Government.

Consider that back in the 50's 60's and 70's all those presidents killed some 3 million Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians and it didn't cost them much political capital (except Johnson) In fact it got Nixon elected.

In 1983 Ronald Reagan told 13 lies in one speech justifying the Grenada invasion. They bombed a mental hospital He got relected as I recall.

In 2003 Shrub Bush lied his backside off and invaded Iraq and he got reelected.
Obama can lie with the best of them and all he need say is that Jamaica has become the drug smuggling capitol of the hemisphere and that the CRIMINAL government is in cahoots with the drug gangs.
He can get Hillary Clinton to get up at the U.N. (now that Colin Powell has dropped out of the lying business) and tell all sorts of fairy tales with pictures, diagrams, 8 x 10 photos of the drug labs etc and before you can say we're in deep DOO-DOO or Dudus if you like the Marines will be landing in Kingston and the dumbass blood crazed American people will be cheering him on like the Second Coming of Christ.

Yeah Johnny, that's quite a scenario you painted, but nothing as dramatic will occur. Both sides will eventually find a way to settle this dispute and become better friends when all the dust has settled. You can bet the farm on it...

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Evangelist Patricia Cole is no stranger to politics.

In 2001, she wrangled her way through key connections to set up a prayer meeting with then Prime Minister PJ Patterson, who consequently signed a national proclamation along with Opposition leader Edward Seaga and Governor General Howard Cooke calling all Jamaicans to pray for two days. Again in 2007, while on a mission in the United States, she set up a prayer meeting with then Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller through a direct phone call to her office.



Now she's seeking -- albeit with little success so far -- a meeting with Prime Minister Bruce Golding.

&quot;I am trying to make contact because the Lord has given me a message for our prime minister concerning the extradition of Mr Christopher 'Dudus' Coke among other things. I don't want to hide and give it to him. God's name must be glorified. Jamaica must know that this word is coming from God,&quot; she told the Observer West.

Cole declined to divulge the message in detail.

&quot;I am not going to tell what the Lord has said to me about 'Dudus' yet. I am seeking an urgent meeting with the prime minister and the others who are involved so that I can tell them first. After that I will share what I have been told by the Lord with the rest of the nation. In the meantime, Jamaica -- it's leaders and people -- need to repent. I have seen how the Lord has held back the winds of strife... earthquake, hurricane, floods because of the prayers of people in this nation. However, he will not hold back indefintely, this is the last warning,&quot; she told the Observer West.

Quoting from the biblical book of Haggai, Cole warned that failure on the part of the nation to obey the will of the Almighty would lead to certain destruction.

&quot;Persistent disobedience of this nature has very severe repercussions... drought and futility. It's right there we sow much, but bring in little, we drink, but we are not filled, we wear clothes, but we are still exposed and we earn wages, only to put it into a bag of holes,&quot; she said.

&quot;We have sinned and have committed iniquity and have done wickedly and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts... confusion of the face belongeth to us, therefore the curse is poured upon us,&quot; she continued, quoting from from the biblical book of Daniel.

A former bank employee, Cole was born in Bunkers Hill, Trelawny in 1952.

After graduating from the Holmwood Technical High school, she migrated to the United States where she continued her career before marrying and returning to Jamaica to work in her husband's business.

It wasn't until she got ill though, that she switched gears to become a Christian.

Since then she has become a key figure in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, using her connections to secure meetings and teleconferences with various leaders including US President Barack Obama on national issues.

&quot;She has prayed with me from time to time... what she is saying is correct,&quot; Simpson Miller told the Observer West.

&quot;I know that prime ministers are very busy, but sometimes you have to find the time for all people, including those from the religious sector. I never turned my back on prayer and I believe that the Government should open itself to prayer and try to stay in touch with the people, because if ever there was a time that Jamaica needs prayer, it is now,&quot; Simpson Miller added.

Tamika Hastings, Seaga's research assistant, also confirmed Cole's involvement with him.

&quot;Yes, she has met with him and in fact we are in the process of setting up another meeting with him right now... it is just a matter of co-ordinating their itineraries as they both travel a lot,&quot; she told the Observer West.

In the meantime, Cole, who is scheduled to leave the island on the weekend, says she is not about to give up on Golding.

&quot;When I called his office they told me to stay where I was and pray for him, but that is not good enough. The Lord wants me to meet with him directly and give him the message,&quot; she said.

Friend, not foe - US Embassy opens its doors in bid to allay negative perceptions about its visa process

High-ranking officials at the United States (US) Embassy in Kingston are seeking to assure Jamaicans that America remains a friend of the country and not a foe. In an unusual display of transparency, the embassy opened its doors to the press last Friday and gave a never-before-seen view of the operations inside the bowels of its Old Hope Road complex.

The move was in sync with the more conciliatory diplomatic posture announced by the Barack Obama administration.

David Stone, consul general at the US Embassy in Kingston, said contrary to popular belief, consular officers, who conduct the visa interviews, do not get a kick out of turning down an applicant.

Stone said the officers do not set out with the preconceived intention of turning down an applicant.

&quot;The embassy does not enjoy turning down applications. The consular officers are human beings,&quot; he said.

Not a tortue chamber

Laurence Tobey, chief of the visa section of the US Embassy, also sought to dispel the tales making the rounds about the mission's visa operations.

&quot;The public thinks of it as a torture chamber, but it's not,&quot; Tobey said.

Rebecca Park, deputy public affairs officer at the US Embassy, told our news team that the mission has been trying &quot;little by little, to open things up the best we can&quot;.

But that push towards trans-parency, designed to demystify certain public perceptions, must conform to the embassy's stringent security requirements.

Park admitted that the mission does operate like a &quot;fortress&quot; (our news team must concur, especially after the tour), but not without cause, as the safety mechanisms protect both embassy employees and visitors, which includes visa applicants.

She said while this show of a friendlier face was not a direct order from Washington, it is definitely linked to the diplomatic tone set by President Obama.

Park added that the public perception of the mission's operations matters to Isiah Parnell, the United States chargé d'affaires to Jamaica who took up office some seven months ago. &quot;When he first came to town, he made it very clear that he wanted to open up a bit,&quot; she said.

After being read the rules of engagement which included no photographing of security personnel, security equipment or embassy employees, and no interviewing or interfacing with applicants, The Sunday Gleaner was given a tour of the property and a first-hand look at how the embassy does its business from the inside.

The tour was spawned by a Sunday Gleaner article entitled 'Serious vibes outside US Embassy' that was published earlier this month.

After going through two major security checkpoints which were equipped with high-tech security equipment, the virgin voyage began.

The property is pristine; immaculately kept, except for some dried leaves seen on the lawns. It was well fortified indeed. Iron railings line certain sections of the property.

It is deliberately compartment-alised in a manner that prevents access to key areas from certain sections of the property.

Several of the doors our news team walked through were heavy and metallic.

Because of the ban placed on interviewing the applicants, their faces would have to tell their stories. Some of the faces spoke eloquently.

The area where applicants wait to be interviewed is divided into two sections: one for persons applying for non-immigrant visas, and the other for those applying for immigrant visas.

Over in the immigrant section a lady was seen biting her nails. A sign of worrying? Not really. She did not look too concerned. The young woman was probably just passing the time by chewing on her nails.

As we made our way through the waiting/interview area, we could feel the eyes of the applicants piercing our skin, as they tried to decipher how the media managed to infiltrate the embassy's fortress.

Over in the non-immigrant section, a little girl, being held in the arms of a woman who was standing at one of the interview windows, was singing her heart out as her little feet dangled in mid-air. The woman did not join in the chorus.

Her documents were on the counter as she waited for the consular officer conducting the interview to return.

She had more serious business to attend to and was not yet sure if it was time to celebrate. Still, the little girl sang loudly as if she had not a care in the world.

In the midst of it all, a young woman walked away from the interview window and headed to the exit. She was not singing or smiling. A friend shouted to her, trying to ascertain if she had been successful.

She tried to tell him no quietly. He did not hear. That made it harder for her. She turned and mouthed &quot;Mi no get it&quot; to her friend and then turned and walked away.

Before you knew it, she had cleared the security checkpoint and was out of the embassy and standing on the median strip along Old Hope Road waiting to go across to the other side.

Happy ending

Another young lady was smiling, though. She touched another female friend on her way out of the interview area and flashed what appeared to be her approval card along with her pearly whites. You either leave happy or dejected. That is how the story ends.

There is now a concessionary stand, located adjacent to the building that houses the waiting area, where applicants can purchase refreshments and snacks while they wait to be interviewed.

&quot;We are trying with the customer-service thing. We are really trying,&quot; said Fern Whyte, acting media coordinator at the US Embassy.

The embassy officials also revealed that plans are afoot to start construction on a covering that would provide shade for the applicants while they wait outside the embassy for their appoint-ments.

The design has been approved and construction should get under way later this year. &quot;The driving force behind these designs are security, not customer service,&quot; said Stone of the construction of the US Embassy complex.
