Malaria found among prison population?

RJR News has received reports of suspected malaria cases among inmates at the Horizon Remand Centre on Spanish Town Road in Kingston.

Calls to our news centre from persons claiming to be inmates and relatives of inmates at the facility, as well as checks with sources within the prison system, suggest that the disease is affecting some inmates.

However, extensive efforts Tuesday night to reach Commissioner of Corrections Major Richard Reese for comment, were futile.

The high security remand centre is located within proximity to Denham Town, one of the communities hardest hit by the mosquito-borne disease.

Malaria cases now stand at 163

The Health Ministry is reporting that 163 cases of malaria have been confirmed in the affected communities.

This includes 18 positive results from 330 blood samples tested at the Centres for Disease Control in the United States.

Director of Emergency Disaster Management in the Health Ministry, Dr. Marion Bullock-Ducasse, says the strategy of early case detection and prompt treatment remains in place as the Ministry attempts to deal with the malaria out break.

Dr. Bullock-Ducasse says all persons showing symptoms of the disease including those in the prison population will be treated presumptively.

She says the Ministry has now shifted its attention from testing the blood samples taken when the malaria outbreak was first discovered.

According to Dr. Bullock-Ducasse the priority is now on testing new blood samples.

She says this will enable the Health Ministry to identify any later transmission and to confirm the extent which it has contained the outbreak.

The Health Ministry first raised the red flag about a possible malaria problem on December 1 after several persons in the Corporate Area communities of Trench Town, Tivoli Gardens, Denham Town and Rose Town tested positive for the disease.

The outbreak has been confined to these communities and neighbouring areas with a handful of suspected cases in St. Catherine.

However, the Opposition is still not convinced that the Health Ministry is doing enough to control the malaria outbreak.

Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Ken Baugh, is insisting that more needs to be done.

According to Dr. Baugh there should be an islandwide programme to prevent the spread of the disease.

nary a peep about malaria

New information has revealed a further increase in the number of malaria cases reported in the Corporate Area.

A few weeks ago it was reported that there was a lull in the number of cases.

However data released Friday by the Ministry of Health show that the figure is again climbing and now stands at 248.

Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sheila Campbell-Forrester, says the Ministry's surveillance system indicates that transmission is still occurring in communities where the disease surfaced more than a month ago.

The areas are Denham Town, Tivoli Gardens, Greenwich Town, Trench Town, Delacree Park and Union Gardens.

Dr. Campbell-Forrester says since the start of the year 62 new cases of malaria have been reported.

In the meantime, the Health Ministry is alerting persons who have been infected with malaria to take the necessary precaution as they are still vulnerable to the disease.

Dr. Campbell-Forrester says while transmission will not occur during treatment, a completely treated person can be re-infected if bitten by the anopheles mosquito.

Dr. Campbell-Forrester says unlike some known diseases which are contracted once, malaria can be contracted repeatedly if the necessary precaution is not taken.

In the meantime, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) says it is still not convinced that the Helath Ministry has the malaria outbreak under control.

According to Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Ken Baugh, the growing number of new cases is a clear sign that the ongoing vector control programme has not been effective.

Dr. Baugh is calling on Health Minister Horace Dalley to give the country a comprehensive update on the malaria outbreak as well as efforts to eradicate the breed of mosquito which transmits the disease.

Malaria hits Greenwich Town

THE government says there has been an unusually high number of malaria cases in the South West St Andrew community of Greenwich Town, which was not one of the original areas affected by the outbreak last year.

Minister of Information and Development Donald Buchanan said the spread to Greenwich Town has been traced back to the original affected areas which include Trench Town, Denham Town, Tivoli Gardens and Delacree Park.

The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) last week expressed concerns about the latest figures coming out on the outbreak, which have gone over the 200 mark and which suggested that the outbreak may be spreading into other areas.

At the beginning of the year, the Ministry of Health reported 186 confirmed cases of malaria, with 159 people successfully treated. But, by mid-January, the minister, Horace Dalley, confirmed that the cases had risen to 209, including 25 confirmed within the first 10 days of January. There was also a report from the ministry of a single case being found in Clarendon.

Dr Sheila Campbell Forrester, acting chief medical officer in the health ministry, said in December that the ministry had destroyed 50 breeding sites, 25 in the Corporate Area, and 24 in St Catherine.

However, she said that the addition of four Cubans to the mosquito control team had enhanced the ministry's efforts

Health Minister blames foreigner for malaria outbreak

Health Minister Horace Dalley has pointed the finger at foreign nationals for the recent outbreak of malaria in the island.

Mr. Dalley says while Jamaica has been malaria free for years, several persons from countries where the disease is endemic are living in the inner city communities of Kingston.

“There are a lot of people from malarious countries living in the inner city and a lot of Haitians,” said Mr. Dalley.

“In Haiti you have endemic malaria and the people in the communities of Tivoli Gardens, Rema and parts of Jones Town and all around St. Andrew know that there are Haitians living in there,”

Mr. Dalley is urging these foreigners to visit a health centre for treatment even if they are living in the island illegally.

“I'm saying to the public it’s not concern about the immigration status of these people we are not concerned if they are here legally. That is not my concern because I am not the Minister of National Security and Immigration, my concern is that of public health,”

“Therefore, if these people are living there I am asking the community citizens to bring them to the Ministry of Health and our officers and let us treat them and send them back to the communities. I am not going to hand them over to Immigration, I am not concerned with them. There are many foreigners who are living and hiding in Jamaica who have malaria and they need to be treated,” he continued.

More than 250 cases of malaria have been confirmed since the outbreak was first confirmed last December.

Typical bloody idiot.. w Even if they are maleria carriers... They would go for treatment if they have an attack.. If he's seen an attack maleria he would not chat such fawrt.. There has been forgienrs living in Jamaica for years. A poltician make hay out of a easy target... Get to the cause.. the stagnat water.. lack of public hygene. the out break was urban centered. the return of the anophiles mosquito.

Yes once it is here, it has to be supported in certain ways. You are correct in IDing the various eco/bio-system that is @ the heart of the current outbreak.
