In my time I have seen some Jamaican boys and men behave violently towards anything that moved for no apparent reason at all. Girls are exempted, because I have never seen girls behave as violently towards innocent beings as males have.
Anything that moved, meaning to say like that of a john crow perched within range on a branch, a dog lost and wondering out of its territory, animals in general. Even a porcupine fish or what we call a sour sop fish swimming just inches below the surface and exposed to the naked eye, gets a stone or anything that can be flung to hit it.
Known homosexuals or what are perceived to be homosexuals fit into the very category as those hapless animals. Apparently homosexuals and innocent indefensible animals are seen as weak and different hence the violent reaction meeted towards them by certain males that seem to want to establish some kind of authority and some kind of superiority.
Perhaps in some cases, certain males are uncertain about their very own sexuality and feel vulnerable when exposed to others who show a tendency towards uncommon or what is thought to be immoral behaviour such as homosexuality. They are not capable to accept other than what they are taught to accept.
Almost anything beyond the ordinary is met by an occasion of hostility.
Why Jamaicans in general seem to be so homophobic?
I dont know the pathological reasons but I relate the common factor between weak and lost animals vulnerable to certain humans that react violently to that of homosexuality confrontations where simular reactive behaviour is demonstrated.
It would be interesting to know if other people of different nationalities behave simularly when the same occasions arise.

Indeed so. Most white folks that exhibit racist behaviour have been taught to look down on minorities, Blacks are main examples.
Racist whites see themselves as superior and anything that moves that does not look like them, they exhibit hostility.
Racism towards Black folks are exhibited because of the servitudinal, property owned plantation/slavery history as well as the contrast of physical amenities that meet the eye, where racist whites see themselves as pretty lily white and they see blacks as ugly tar and coal.
When Blacks are present, these ignorant and `educated to hate` set of white people react simularly as do homophobics react to homophobia.

I really think that people who are intolerant towards people because of `surface` causes such as difference of skin colour and homophobia have demons within their very souls that are constantly at odds with one another, insecurely fighting at what to them is not normal. And most of those very demons were put there by what was unavoidably learnt and passed on by the same demons that drove fear into their foreparents.
Just like potty training, prejudices of variety were not born within, but were acquired firstly by the word/thought and secondly by application.

For most of its existence it has been about State terror against organizations and individuals. Amnesty International has more recently turned is focus to person of person crime.

As to been a white organization. I first heard of and became a member of Amnesty International as young PNP activist, at that time AI was in the forefront for the fight to end Apartheid and to free all the oppressed in South Africa as well as around the world, that ultimately meant that AI was and still is in the forefront to of the fight on behalf of coloured folks around the world.

This is not the first time I am admitting that I am a member of AI and it was one of the reasons why DahJah hated me on the board. Now miss f.a.$$y ole if you want tek the fight against me, go right on ahead.

Many of those thugs have been emasculated by certain socio-economic conditions and resort to this kind of violence in order to assert some sort of 'manhood.' Others among the mob who may be more well off are also seeking to assert some notion of manhood. Their chanting: "kill di [censored] bwoy" "all [censored] fi dead" is to affirm those notions. They are not all repressed homosexuals. I believe some are. For them, manhood and homosexuality are incompatible. However, even if this was a valid point of view, why the need to resort to violence? Perhaps it is his own insecurities that drive him to violence.

Violence against homosexuals is just a part of the general incivility of an increasingly vast segment of Jamaican society. Mob violence is an example of the breakdown of law and order in Jamaica. It's usually directed against male homosexuals - real or perceived - generally not against women; a lot of men are intrigued by 'girl on girl' action, let's be honest.

Jamaica may criminalize the practice, but it can't stop people from having their associations behind closed doors in private spaces unless it has a 'morality police' whose job is to peep through key holes or hide under windows. Even if homosexuality was decriminalized, many Jamaicans would remain hostile to it - largely out of religious belief. Violence against homosexuals will continue as long as ordinary people refuse to condemn the violence out of fear that they are branded as homosexuals themselves. Violence is wrong regardless of whom it is perpetrated against. We should have the courage to condemn it in all its forms. I can say, well, that's not my thing, it doesn't appeal to me, but hey, that's your taste, and I won't consider you less of a human being because of that. Amnesty International is right in bringing attention to this incivility.

A joint forum of church, human rights lobbyists and politicians from both sides of the political divide, made a desperate plea yesterday for Jamaicans to end violence against homosexuals.

The forum, headed by Political Ombudsman and clergyman, Bishop Herro Blair, said while the act is illegal and immoral, Jamaicans must abstain from mob violence and should instead seek to build a culture of tolerance for such individuals.

In recent months, there has been a drastic increase in the number of mob attacks on homosexuals, the group claimed with as many as 16 since January according to the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians and All-Sexuals (JFLAG). This is coming from a figure of 40 beatings in 2006, JFLAG claimed.

In the latest incident, a Manchester church was stoned as it conducted a funeral service for a businessman who was believed to be homosexual which led the officiating pastor to quickly move the body to the burial ground. Mobsters attempted to follow the body to the burial site, but the police were called in.

The group is also calling on the police to be more sensitive to cases involving alleged homosexuals and to treat them equally under the law.

He said if the security forces make the first move, then the rest of society might follow suit.

Play by the rules

"Our people must be told that the law must have its course and until, if and when (and I pray that it will never be that the law is changed), then we have to abide and play by the rules," said Bishop Blair. "I heard of a case last week where a member of a family went to visit someone and, in visiting the person, was labelled to be homosexual and was thoroughly thrashed. <span style="color: #FF0000">It (did not come out) that the person was not a homosexual until he sought help of members of the security forces, who said they literally had nothing to do with homosexuals," said the Bishop.

His comments were echoed by Dr. Carolyn Gomes, executive director of Jamaicans For Justice, who added that a request had been made to meet with the police to discuss the issue.

"(We must) ensure that the police force knows for itself and sends the message down that they are to protect, serve and reassure all Jamaicans and uphold equal treatment for all Jamaicans," she said.
