Jamaica grapples tonight in dark anticipation to what might unfold regarding the latest upsurge in political violence.

All political meetings have been banned with immediate effect.

Tune in the next few days up to Monday Sept 3 when at 6 o`clock PM, the polls will be closed.

Lots of desperate people are running around seemingly seeing the writing on the wall, an end to 18 years of a one party rule.

For the 1st time PNP pollster Bill Johnson has given the JLP the lead and with the present momentum that the JLP is showing over the incumbent, things are not looking good for Team Portia.

Man killed and AK47 seized in Downtown Kingston

A 39-year-old man was shot dead by the police who seized a high powered weapon and 40 rounds of ammunition during a police/military operation in downtown, Kingston Thursday afternoon.

The dead man has been identified as Carlos Richards, otherwise called Willie Reds of a Fleet Street address.

The police reported that shortly after midday, a police/military team conducted an operation on premises along Fleet Street in Central Kingston.

Members of the security forces were reportedly about to enter a room when Mr. Richards allegedly pointed a gun at them.

The police and soldiers took evasive action and opened fire on Mr. Richards.

The police say they took an AK47 rifle with 15 rounds of ammunition from him.

The security personnel conducted a search of his room and found a container with 15 AK47 rounds and 10 nine milimetre rounds.

The police further reported that a molotov cocktail bomb was also found in the room.

Jamaica is among three Caribbean countries cited for the highest cases of rape in the world.

Topping the list of the top 10 recorded rape rates in the world is the Bahamas.

The United Nations/World Bank report shows that in the Bahamas, the number of reported rapes is almost 15 times higher than most countries.
Also in the top 10 is St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The high rates of rape in some Caribbean countries have led to the calling of a region wide conference to tackle the problem.

The Bahamas Crisis Centre, which is coordinating the conference in September, said it is hoped that delegates will draw up new strategies to deal with sexual violence against women.

Director Sandra Dean-Patterson said the centre has been grappling with the problem of sexual violence for several years.

Dr. Dean-Patterson lamented that not enough attention was being paid to the problem and she is hoping that the September 25-29 conference will get the attention of regional governments.

Sounds like women groups are neccesary. Women getting together there and demanding attention necc for this problem.

A lot more fatalities took place. You`ll soon get access to the unfortunate situation.

The PNP has never been the type to go quietly. Just look back to 1980 and the violence that ensued when they were ousted. No doubt the flare up in violence is related to the ominous trends in the polls that show that the PNP is on its way out.

Yes there is political violence on both sides, its impossible to control and watch over individual supporters, but the PNP has been particularly heavy handed in this regard.

Which political party has been in power for 22 of the last 30 years ? The PNP. Much of what ails Jamaica can be attributed to the policies that they have implemented. I get melancholy when I see that most of the friends I grew up with, my network, family ties, brethren have been scattered far and wide forced to seek refuge in foreign lands because of chronic lack of opportunities for advancement in JA and runaway crime. I'd say that more than two thirds of the people I went to high school with no longer live in JA. That is the ultimate legacy of the PNP misadministration.

Part of the blame for the way things are in JA can be placed at the foot of the electorate. We NEED to get it right on September 3rd by using the only tool available to us that the politicians understand. The ballot box.The PNP has become puffed up, arrogant, and have forgotten that they are accountable to the people. We need to firmly, vigorously, and strenuously apply the rod of correction available to us through the ballot to the bottom of the PNP. A good old fashioned whipping is the only message they will understand.

this is an outright lie.....the upsurge in violence actually started in the 70's with the PNP in power,When Ciaga and his CIA cohorts used violence to dethrone Manley......It appears that the JLP will form the next government because the PNP is lead by an idiot and have been in power for 18 years no amount of violence will stop this from occuring
