Cheaper.
Don't feel constrained to walk around with a device that is finicky, might break, attractive to thieves.
No vibrate, don't feel constrained to answer it, let it go to voice mail
Might shock you during a storm but wont eat your brain cells!

So is the phone line in a manner of speaking, but not quite, there are many levels of protection from encroaching signals.

Not with FIOS.. It is dedicated to you .. Fiber Optic to the home with your own bandwidth

Landline phone is just there. by the time you make a phone call it is $35 + fees

They have devices that allow you to dock your cell to your home phone and manage the cell calls via the traditional phone structure (see J-Kids links above)

I think AT&amp;T is now offering a service called U-verse that will provide extreme broadband over copper facilities though.

it IS faster than a T1

and cat6 cable to route to all the connections so no copper in the house

the NID generally outside the home is now replaced with an ONT that has battery backup.. The downside is that with copper you could still have dial tone without electricity and with FIOS you have the backup battery which is good for about 8 hrs.

I don't know about the new devices but there have been devices from get that give you a dial tone and let you connect as if using an old POTS Device.

True story between 1989 when came to America as an adult till about 1995 I new had a Land Line. I used a Cellular Phone. Look up the devices from that ear and the average bills to see how far things have come and how much I have installed in the Cellular Providers.
At that time I lived in Hotels, Motels and Temporary Habitats.

I then went off Cell Phones for a while just got another last year, so I missed 7 years of this decade's phone development and cheaper rates.
Now I have a Cell Phone and no Land Lines, but only have a Cellular Phone because I wanted to write and test programs for Windows Devices against the handsets, but now I am stuck with a Cellie because I am once again on the temp/as is lifestyle.

I finally got rid of my landline just this past month. I live alone and am using my cell more and more, so I finally asked myself, &quot;why am I paying for two phones&quot;? It has been almost three weeks now and I don't miss it.

When I called the phone company to disconnect my landline they offered to reduce my bill by $7 a month just to try and keep me as a customer.
