Patience, my dear, patience.

On the Symantec website is a document regarding XP Service Pack 3 and the problems it causes with wireless connections. Apparently, there is a file you have to download that will remove some entries from the registry. The document is linked here. The assumption is you're using Norton's 2008, though I would use it regardless.

I would re-enable Norton's Firewall before working with the document to cover all the bases.

I think I have a deliberate mental block on all things IT.

Thanks for the link. I just printed it off and will walk thru it on both computers. I am running 2008 on both as well.

I need to focus a minute on some work and make some money , so I will go thru the stuff a bit later this afternoon. Thanks a bunch for the help

I'll check in later, but apparently that Nortons is a dog of a software to work with. And no, we/you won't break anything as all changes can be easily reversed. Such is the nature of troubleshooting, especially via a BBS

Without reading all the preceding details, all I am saying in this post is:

If you are simply networking a few systems and peripherals never use Windows XP Setup Wizard.

Never Map a Drive, if you need quick access to it then put shortcut on your Desktop.

As was advised before, make sure all networked items are on the same Work Group.

Better give Printers a Static IP or use USB where you can because they can throw out your Network badly in Windows XP

If the Network Setup fail the first time it most likely that Computer acting as the server needs a few minutes to get online, especially where you have changed Computer/Peripheral(s) Names and/or Work Group(s)

I just deleted everything and started again.

The workgroup on both computers have the same name.

I can see my desktop under the workgroup name on my laptop.

What I cannot do is access the shared files on the desktop.

Yes, I did share them and I entered the computer name and folder name and it cannot access it.

If I skip the mapping part like suggested, and just try to access the files thru say Excel, I can again, connect to the desktop but just not the files.

I ran the program on both 'puters and it says I have no registry conflicts.

OK. Now I'm dusting off parts of my brain that I had retired some five years ago Now that you have reconfigured the network and the problem remains, I'm <span style="font-style: italic">thinking</span> maybe there's a security policy issue, so let's check that.

On the PC with the resource:

Admin tools -&gt; Local Security Policy -&gt; Local Policies -&gt; User Rights Assignment.

First item should be ‘Access this computer from the network’ and should have a security setting that defines the type of users allowed to access the PC. It should say Administrators, Everyone, etc... Check if this is blank.

Look over this MS article re being unable to access shared files and folders or browse computers in the workgroup with Windows XP. I did notice enabling NETBIOS/WINS mentioned. Did you review that after you reconfigured?
