1. insert it

2. reboot your machine and follow the prompt to repair or re-install your OS

if you got the original full operating system disc and you can get to the dos prompt while your pc is trying to boot up then type this:

1. cd

2. format c:

3 press yes to the whatever question(s)

4. type a name for your new drive label or just press enter.

5. once format is complete insert your new win 2000 or xp installation disc

6. reboot your computer and following the easy prompts - (selecting yes or ok) as the installation is in progress

7. when done install your new software all over again. [/qb]

Hi Morpheous. I just saw you posted this. Thing is, I have absolutely nothing but the laptop. No disc or nothing. It used to belong to Sprint and they had those passcodes on it for security, you know.

I know absolutely nothing much about computers. I also plan to take courses with this computer guy after he installs XP Pro on my system. So rather than bungle up my laptop, I'd better let him do it.

Ms Goody, mek sure him also install MS Office for you. Di operating system won't bi very usefull without some practical software on it also.

It's not a matter of better but what suits you.

XP Professional is an operating system more designed to run like a server. Windows 2000/2000 pro also is designed to run as a server while XP Home Edition is designed more for people like you the home user.

While XP Pro is better designed to cope with managing and running clients processes it is prone to more potential attacks by hackers. Hence unless you are from a server administrator background or understand fully how servers are setup, run and managed you will only invite more trouble than you can handled.

XP Home Edition is therefore a scale down version of XP Pro for those who are not technically knowledgable about servers. It also comes with built in firewal etc just like XP Pro but the home edition is pre-configured from the manufacturer to eleiminate external threats.

From what I can gather therefore, XP Pro would not suite anyone than say UNIX/Linux unless your gonna run a client/server architecture-(network). Apart from that there is little diffeence between them in terms of noticable performance.

My PC has got XP Pro because I use it to run Apache, MySQL, PHP amd ASP among other things. My laptop has got XP Home Edition because I use it purely for surfing the net and doing briefings/meetings/presentations with clients.

Fair enough...

If you bought XP Pro since that's what you desire, then It may well work out cheaper in the long run to by the disc and install it yourself. It's really so simple a baby could do it!!

1. Insert the XP Pro disc
2. Turn off your laptop
3. Turn it on again and follow the steps
4. select Yes or OK as it prompts you


It's really that simple!!!

Plus if you fall into trouble again and need to re-install you just pop the disc in and do steps 1 - 4 again. Eliminating the need to pay this guy each time you get into trouble.

I wish it were that simple for me, Morpheous. I tried exactly what you said. I inserted the disc, powered off and back on. It kept saying "before setup, restart your computer". ??? I honestly believe the admin. passcode is blocking me. That's why I'd rather wipe the system clean and then install XP.

BTW...I think I prefer the XP Home Edition now that you have explained the difference. I have no use for servers and such. Just surfing and other stuff. I'm far from computer savvy.

J-kid...I finally got XP Pro. installed on my laptop. The first guy installed it and the first time I logged on the Internet, a virus was on it and I was locked out of my computer for 2 weeks because no one could get it off. The man that installed it, claimed to be an ex-hacker and teefed weh with my money. He couldn't get it off.

So I went to a man that installed Windows 98 on it and then XP on top of that and it finally worked. No virus in sight. And he did add MS Office too. So I'm straight now.

be sure to have the latest security patches from MS. And also install antivirus and firewall software.
If you didn't do this you may infected by virus or other pest within minutes if you're surfin

Ok, thanks. Love. I'll check with him and see if he did install one. The first guy installed one after the fact.

Regular Mozilla, or Mozilla Firefox browser.

Yes, Firefox browser is very nice.
It will prevent you to get infected by the Internet Explorer holes.
But you have to install also the latest available versions of firefox, because no browser is 100% save.
