My broadband modem has this in the status box:

Rx Data Rate : 1152 Kbps - (recieve)
Tx Data Rate : 288 Kbps - (transmit)


There are cheaper braodband over here in the UK if one shops around; as low as £14.99 p/m which is USD$23.98 p/m and JA$1,469.02 p/m but, that is not for 1MB service, it's for the lower speed of 512K. In the lower speeds I find you have to pay for the modem and your surfing hours are limited as well as your banwidth usage per month.

With the 1MB package the modem is free, hours of surfing is unlimited and the banwitdth usage is unlimited. One got to look at the whole package and not just the speed/bandwidth of the modem.

So COOLKAT the "land law" won't accept the cabling fi yuh broadband eh?? In london all wires, gas-pipes are underground just like you normal water-pipes. Nothing above ground but a few telephone poles. The main telephone line is also run underground and the broadband is integrated into the phone line so no need to run extra cables. Even cable TV services have there wires run underground.

I use directv satalite service. Directv have there internet service call direcway, but too
expensive for my pocket right now.

Government opens up telecomm industry

Jamaicans could be paying significantly less for high speed Internet access by the middle of next year.

The reduced prices should flow from the Government's decision to open up that section of the telecommunications industry to two new players.

Now Cable and Wireless is the country's only provider of the fiber optic cables linking Jamaica to North America. But early this year the Government announced that it would be offering a license to another entity to provide this service.

RJR News has now learnt that the Government has bowed to pressure and agreed to increase to two, the number of licenses which it will be offering for the installation and operation of fiber optic cables between Jamaica and Florida.

The Technology Ministry had initially decided that one license would be granted. But several players in the telecommunications industry raised objections and requested that this number be increased.

Friday the Ministry informed the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) that it has revised its decision. In a directive to the OUR the Technology Ministry said the number of licenses to be issued should be increased to two. However the Ministry has not yet indicated why it bowed to the pressure. The OUR confirmed the change but was unable to provide any information on the reason.

Director of Consumer and Public Affairs at the OUR, David Geddes, told RJR News that it has decided to extend the deadline for applications from Monday October 25 to Monday November 1. This will allow interested entities to reassess their bids in line with the latest development.

Last Month Technology Minister, Phillip Paulwell, announced that five entities had already expressed an interest in purchasing the right to lay fiber optic cables.

For years Cable and Wireless has had a monopoly on the fiber optic cable network from Jamaica to North America. This means that companies in Jamaica which offer Internet and other data intensive services have to use the Cable and Wireless network.

With two new players entering the market the country is expected to enjoy a dramatic reduction in the cost of high speed Internet service.

I pay 45 dollars a month plus I get 2 hours free long-distance to call jamaica every month with Bell Canada for DSL
