Just some extra info for you guys out there...
It is good practice and more efficient that when you network computers together you give each computer the following...
XP Home and XP Professional:
[1] IP address - must be unique (192.168.number.number.)
[2] Subnet address - must be the same on all machines (255.255.255.0)
[3] Default gateway - IP of any other computer you want connected to the present one. (192.168.number.different number)
You can do this via the LAN icon on each computer.
Rightclick->Properties->Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)->Properties
Once you have given each computer an IP address unique to each machine it is much more robust and efficient to create/add special rules or advance rules-(Sygate) in your chosen firewall(s) by assigning the appropriate IP address that identifies each machine.
The same way this website needs an IP address is the same way you can create "special" IP addresses for your LAN machines.
It also helps to place a shortcut icon of each LAN on your desktop if you only network say two or three machines. And by the way you don't have to leave your server/computer that the printer is connected to on 24/7. As long as the machines concerned are switched on and the LAN is enabled then your OK. I switch mine off every night to give my power supply a rest.Comment

So Morph, if you wanted to print in the middle of the night, are you saying, you would just send it to the printer without first turning back on the PC that has the printer hooked directly to it (as long as the printer itself is still on)?Comment

If you are going to doing a lot of printing best thing is to use a Wired Print Server, with a good buffer, then you will not loose any functionality.
Used ones are cheaper on ebay than they were a year ago.
SMC Barricade 9Model SMC7004WBR) is a good router with a built in Print Server. This might not be a good choice because it is only 802.11a, however it is cheap and worked with both our laser and inkjet till we bought a dedicated network laser printer with its own interface.Comment

Mi jus waa get a better understanding of whe Morph mean. I am not sure if he is using a stand-alone printer server in his setup or not?Comment

It's obvious dat if yuh kannect yuh printa to one machine and that machine is networked on a LAN. Any other computa dat need access to it have to go via the computer di printer kannect pan. Mi nah talk bout standalone network printers that have a netowrk printer card installed/server interface etc. fi service many computers independently...

Explanations here are not for you or me but, but for the people who are NOT as technically savy. If there are gaps or potential mis-interpretation in the explanation, part of my job, is to either try to clear it up (if the writer is MIA) or have the original author clear it up since he/she is the one that knows the original intent and their train of thought. I would have thought though, that those who are trying to network 2 or more computers together are a bit more experienced than the "average" computer user but just need little tips when them stuck. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]Comment

Ordinarily, that may be true, But there are many who don’t know and would like to try something new. Remember the your first time stepping out into the unknown? I remember mine. It can be a scary experience sometimes for the not so adventurous. You are filled with so many questions and there are so many blanks spots; bits of information here and there, and all you need is someone to help tie them together for you.
The idea here is to educate the Jamaican community (any anyone else connected with it) about the benefits of technology, the wealth of information out there and not to be scared of the unknown. Sometimes that will take a lot of patience because you don’t want to scare them off. My intent here is to make them comfortable enough to be more curious and want to stay, since the wrong word or phrase, or tone can send them running for the hills. The main intent is to be of service to the JA.com community and to make people who come here comfortable enough that they want to stay. With the help of people like you, and others on here we can accomplish that, even though it gets challenging at times. I will tell you a little secret.

Yes I agree with you there. When I was doing my masters at uni. I remember one lecturer telling the class that to be a teacher/mentor in any field takes a special skill.
While some may be quite knowledgeable and even the best in there chosen field, they may not be skilled in how to convey the information they have to others in a way they can understand without feeling intimidated or confused.
I must confess I don't posses that "kind" of skill and to be a teacher/mentor takes a whole heap a patience.
But sometime mi try and make the effort to help only in selective areas. Other topics I leave for others unless it becomes a stalemate then mi might step in and inject my little 2 cents. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]Comment
