Do you have any other devices (printer, thumb drive, mouse, keyboard...etc) that are USB, that you can plug in and try, to at least rule out the USB sockets as the cause?

Yes the card reader should work. It also has its own drivers.

HOORAY!!!!!!

Such a simple fix for such a seemingly huge problem! I heard back from Nikon, what fast service from their tech support I am amazed at that. They had me do some things to the set up of my memory card, and WALLA! This is a good thing as this has been driving me nuts since friday night! It's really hard to tell if it's the computer, the camera, ow what the heck, when you're not a techie!!!

Thanks all for your help! Coming here was theraputic in my time of need!

Here are the instructions, yes I am also saving them in case it happens again!

OH, and BTW, I only had to go as far as setting the memory card. Then when I pluged the camera into the computer it automatically started working, I didn't even have to do the next steps!

FROM NIKON TECH SUPPORT

Try the following steps to see if they resolve your issue.
before connecting camera to your computer turn the dial to setup
arrow down to either interface or usb and right arrow
select mass storage as the usb option

connect camera to computer and turn it on
then right click the my computer icon on your desktop
select properties which will bring up system properties
click on the device manager tab
look for anything with an exclamation or question mark
the camera will show up as either unknown device or mass storage device
double click the device and then click the second tab
which is the driver tab
choose update driver and point the new hardware wizzard to the cd rom drive and into the folder that is called drivers
and the subfolder clpx
windows should pick the driver up from there and install the mass storage driver
start closing the device manager and you will probably get another new hardware wizzard come up for the camera controller just click next all the way through that and your transfer screen should pop up as it should

If mass storage does not work try changing the USB option in the camera to PTP since Windows XP will see both types of transfer.

It would appear that the camera itself was at fault. The interface settings (for the hard drive file transfer) was incorrect.

Yep, J-Kind you're right on! But the problem was sure hard to diagnose! Well, next time someone has this problem, we've got an answer!

Updated for CD-player:
Start > click My Computer > right click CD player icon > properties > auto play tab > choose the type action you want from the down arrow field > select "Prompt me each time to choose an action" > OK. You can also just click on the "Restore Defaults" buttton.
