Repair or Replace

Kids PC -- a 2003 Windows XP

it did the job; provide internet access, allowed for schoolwork editing, etc...

blue screen of death keeps appearing

which do you recommend - take it to repair or replace and if replace, then with what (PC or Mac or minilaptop ?)

my non-expert opinion is that the repair bill wont be worth it at this point b/c how much longer will it last after the fix.

I say, get them a Mac or a mini notebook

Mac would be my first choice though for kids

that was my thought too esp with the MAC (i was thinking for me but better for them cause I have too much to move to another computer at this point)

I would like to hear what the IT guys think too.. cause I still have data I need to get off the desktop if I got a new machine anyway..

ease of use, less virus issues (from what I understand), ease of integration with their other electronics (ie ipod, itouch) ect

so I am digging around.. found what I thought was the XP installation disk (and boot disk) and the sitten still a show the BSOD

went a googling through the microsoft site but does not appear to be a simple way to get a boot disk

so is it worth it to go to tiefing geek sqaud or dare i call <span style="text-decoration: line-through">india</span> tech support?

My opinion. Backup your data to an external, den format di hard drive and re-install the operating system.

Did you change the BIOS boot sequence, to boot from the CD drive FIRST?

Do a search for Windows XP boot CD ISO. Also change boot sequence.

Here is the error i keep getting

bla bla bla run chkdsk /f bla bla bla

I found the Reinstallation CD that came with the PC

Opened CD drive while in BSOD mode, inserted the CD

Turned PC off and then on

Pressed F12

Selected IDE-CD ROM drive (i was thinking this would make the PC boot from the CD ROM drive instead of the Hard Disk)

Got to the diagnostics page

Ran the complete diagnostics of the hard drive

All tests passed

It then boots and the black screen appears again

Safe Mode
Safe mode with Command Prompt
Safe Mode with Networking Options

Boot with last successful configuration

Normal Mode


I have tried all of these options with the same result BSOD

Donkey years ago there was a way to boot off the CD Rom and then step by step review each instruction - dem noh have dat kinda ting again?

I did search for Windows XP boot CD ISO , burned an image and took it to the desktop.. the results were the same as above.

I must be doing something wrong but what?

We dont have zone alarm on the PC but one of the kids did mention they clicked to install an update which makes sense but the issue is how do I get to boot the pc (safe mode or not) to rollback the update?

I thought you made the XP boot disc. You cvan akways start it with a boot disc,or a drive eraser with it's own OS will start it, and erace the drive.
You will need a drive eraser, even of you are going to dump the computer anyway.
You wouldn't want your kids info get in the wrong hands. anyway, the washer can reinvent your puter and make it brain new again any way,
I think you pick up a script name VSmon that has taken over the harddrive. It cann be removed, but you will have to be able to start in safe mode. The 2 ways to start in safe mode is to hold down control while starting up. Or depress the F8 key ping while starting up. The the problem is that windows have to start up, and sometimes it simply will not start. If that happens I suggest you wash the drive clean and start over again.
To do that try,..........As long as you have the original reinstallation CD and the Microsoft Product Key. Get a copy of a HD earser software. I like Stopmsoft Drivewasher. It cost about $30 and can be used to erase times.
Then put it in the CD Rom and let it erase the drive of the whole OS.
Afterall it is only 30 bucks.
Then after it does that you load the original XP software and it will ask for product keys etc. just put them in and it will reload XP.

ok yes I have the boot disk but it is not doing what I want

I am on windows setup to see if I can even get far enough to boot ... and it is stuck on 152587 MB on disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi

this is really making the mac mini more attractive

there is not a lot of data on the pc.. kids schoolwork &amp; music library..

If I can boot I can erase no?

you don't need GEEK squad. you can do it. Just but the$ 30 drive eraser and erase the corrupted OS and reload it again from the disc that came with it.
And you can't erase it without a copy of a disc washer.

That script will not allow the machine tyo reload. Did you try to repair the original OS with the repair option of XP?
The problem is if you get Vsmon off it will work fine. All you have to do is put on a good anitvirus after.
