I'm thinking about switching over from my current phone provider. If anyone here uses it, any issues to be concerned about? (I know I'll need a "regular" line for my home alarm system).

Re: VOIP
Power and internet outages are extremely rare.
Funnily, thinking about VOIP reminds me of when I was making the move from cable to satellite and hearing the stories about signal loss. I've had a few of those but nothing to complain about or that would cause me to rethink that decision. The phone is a different kettle of fish though...aka ChurchDude. I want that moniker back! Until then....

Re: VOIP
I have been using VoIP with the same provider since 2004 and have been quite happy with the service. The backup plan of course is a mobile phone for us.
What I liked most were the flexibility of service and features available at a low fixed price
We can forward calls after x amount of rings to another number
There is a simultaneous ring feature which allows the phone to ring on the VoIP and another line at the same time (downside is if you are on the other line trying to call the VoIP line
)
Flat rate for North America and 6 european countries; costs less to call JA
Ability to view your call record within seconds of a call. View your billing online too.
Aside from the power outage and alarm issue VoIP does offer a lot and the price point does make it affordable. If you don't fight for what you deserve, you deserve what you get.

Re: VOIP
I had VOIP thru Verizon for 3 yrs and was quite happy. They went out of bizniz a few mths ago, and I switched to Vonage. Mi no quite as happy. If I try to make a call when I'm online and a page is loading, the person that I'm talking to perceives silent pauses or a lot of static. They are also famous for billing you for more than your contract...

agreed. I had Vonage for 2 yrs and disliked it a great deal. I changed to cable and was happy to pay the extra bucks just to get decent service.
The sound quality was atrocious
It was hard to do more than one thing like yaardmd mentioned above. Incoming calls originating for non-vonage lines were the worst. Ppl would constantly complain that they could not hear me. I had Vonage play with the bandwidth settings numerous times before I gave up and changed providers.
I loved the online call history logs and the long distance rates were unbeatable, but after time, it wasnt worth the sound quality headaches.

Sound quality on Skype with my current provider is excellent at the moment. I have been told there are no issues with Skype with the VOIP carrier I am considering. I am reluctant to commit to a long-term contract without the benefit of a "cooling off" period in which I can opt out if I'm not satisfied. A bundled VOIP and internet access is far more economical than I'm paying now, but I have very little tolerance for shoddy service.aka ChurchDude. I want that moniker back! Until then....

I use DSL and can't complain about bandwith (cable is shared bandwith so there will always be issues dependent on how many people in your neighbourhood are simultaneously pulling from the same provider).aka ChurchDude. I want that moniker back! Until then....

That much
I love the benefits as well, which is why I'm seriously considering it.
