People should exercise the same amount of caution and good habits that they would if they were going into a rough neighborhood, walking late at night, going to a foreign country, Strangers calling you on the phone or walking up to your door, etc.

You hopefully would not walk with your purse wide open , pull out stacks of money, leave your passport or wallet laying about, just give your social security or other personal info to any stranger?

Out worst enemy can be us (pointing at the man or woman in the mirror). We leave ourselves more vulnerable than we need to. There is a program on the Discovery Channel called, "It Takes A Thief". Watch it sometimes, it will be a real eye opener.

Why worry I am pretty sure X is making the board as technically safe as possible. It is persons who are bent on doing bad things want to do it I am sure they will let nothing bother them and try as hard as they possibly can to defeat all the security that X can buy.

The main weakness on this site is not from crackers. It is from the human element, especially the persons who possess certain privileges.

I know personally at least three moderators who have tried to destroy more than one person's private life by inventing and spreading scurrilous rumors about their targets.

I know of one moderator who used to capture and keep people's IP Address.

I know of moderator(s) are the most racist, biased and bigoted persons on the board, but it doesn't harm their security clearance.

Then we come to the joe and jane blow that are the friends, agents and family members of these so-called moderators. The ones who feed them with the info they need to carry on their dirty deeds. If joe or jane blow is careless with personal or potentially dangerous info then it is no need worrying about a cracker, you already provided the grist for the mills.

The bottom line is, if one logs on daily, participate in the fora with an open mind, a clear conscience and respect for his/her fellow boardite, then one should have no problems.
It is very unlikely that enough of your personal information will fall into the hands of even the most determined cracker if it did not originate from you lips or fingers.
The enemy is within. [/qb]

It is not a matter of knowing so much, in fact I think I know so little because I am not in a clique.
What I have learned over the years have come only by accident, mostly because a few of my fellow Boardites have been the target of many personal attacks by other Boardites who are not particularly constrained by the truth. These attacks have extended to our personal life and worse moderators have been the main perpetuators of this disgraceful behavior.

The information I have is to protect myself not to use to gain favors or to try to destroy persons.

A determined hacker can get past ANY security....trust mi!!!!

Most boards on the internet are writtien in PHP and/or CGI-(Perl). PHP and Perl are both hackers languages...FACT!!!

Your IP, OS and even access to your hard drive can be done using high level programming languages that embed other languages in it i.e Pro C/C++ !!!

I have definately successfully traced hackers trying to hack my machine while I am on Ja.com!!!

If you know how to hack into websites, forums, businesses etc. You also will know how to protect yourself against hackers.

Use a multi-proxy where you can set up your own false IP address(es). You can rotate them or make them your permanent - (fake) IP address to give the hacker wrong map readings and location including your supposedly ISP provider.

Use a machine that is "bare"... just your browser, antivirus and firewall etc, if you are not an expert on Network Layers, OS Layers, Unix shell commands, COMs and TCP/IP to name a few.

Edited to say you can even give your machine a different IP address of your choosing, if you know what you are doing. You can even write a program in Vusual Basic and use C++ to generate IP address that will fool even your ISP and work in conjunction with any multi-proxy.
