Not all firewalls are created equal. Even those that are good, require you to go in and activate certain settings.

Which firewall are you using?

Personally I am not a fan of Norton AV.

The source of your problem could have been through your E-mail (and/or "preview pane" if you are using Outlook).

Yes it is only here on JA .com else Ad aware and Spybot together do their bit.

The one here that bugs me is a gambling site.

I'm still getting the pop-ups. I think I need to remove some processes from the Task Manager....but I don't know what. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

You may want to check what's in your Windows startup. You can look at it by using msconfig in the run box.

Start > Run > A dialog box will open, type in msconfig and hit enter.

A new System Configuration Utility will appear and the General tab will be selected near the top of the frame. At the top select the tab for Startup (far right) and you will be looking at all the programs windows loads on boot.

You need to be careful here as some programs need to load up to function properly (Anti Virus, Software firewalls and the like). I check this list every few months to see what has crept into my startup routine (and thus slows down my PC).

If in doubt post your list of programs from Startup and we can try and help you remove these processes from constantly loading.

After you are all done hit OK and you will be asked to restart your PC. Go ahead and restart and when the PC loads you will get a small system popup telling you that the startup was changed (blah blah blah). Put a check box to prevent this from popping up on every bootup and hit ok.

If you do make any changes I suggest you only make one or two changes to the starup at a time (mostly if you don't know what you are doing). After a few changes exit and reboot to make sure you didnt screw anything up. If something doesnt load like it should you can then go back in and re-enable the program in the startup. Rinse and repeat as needed.

What this will do is speed up your PC by preventing garbage from loading in the background (and they usually stay running using memory and CPU cycles). It also allows you to stop a process so you can uninstall/delete it. Some software wont let you uninstall if the program is loading and running. By removing the program from the startup routine you can then safely remove it (since its not loaded when you try to remove)...make sense?

Start typing them in and I'll tell you what you don't need.

Many programs give you a clue about the file based on the file path to the right of the file name. Not all have it but most will.

If you resize your browser window you can type here and read off the startup list at the same time. Just slide this window over to the right or left a bit, put the msconfig startup list in the gap you create, then start typing. Too bad a copy/paste wont work from that window... =(

What Operating System? XP/ME/Win98
What Firewall are you using?

I use a combination of FireFox (Browser), ZoneAlarm (Software Firewall), and AVG (Anti-Virus) on my PC's and I can only think of a few times in the last year that I actually got a single popup.

Anyway get back to me and I'll see what I can do to help.

Here's the list of items in the startup:

Mixer -- Remove, don't need it on bootup
NeroCheck -- Remove (This is part of Nero CD Burner, when you need to burn a cd just launch Nero)
ccApp -- Leave this alone, its part of your Anti Virus (Norton)
SNDMon -- Leave this alone, Symantec Security Drivers
jusched -- Remove, Sun Java's automatic update scheduler. It periodically starts another process that check for updates for the Jav VM.
realsched --Remove - another updater
hpztsb04 -- Leave alone unless you don't use HP Deskjet Taskbar Utility
MsgPlus --REMOVE and Uninstall! msgplus.exe is distributed as a third party MSN extension. However is also spyware if installed with the sponsor program it offers to install. If this optional sponsor program was installed, this process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising popups. Please see additional details regarding this process.
ISStart -- Probably don't need - isstart.exe is a process installed alongside Logitech QuickCam drivers and offers additional support for images and video streaming output.
LogiTray -- Probably don't need - Allows an easy-access traybar icon which gives access to the diagnostics of this product.
SETUP --Unknown - Is there a path listed to the file? Probably don't need this
ypager -- Yahoo Instant Messenger, if you use Yahoo leave alone
SKIPDRIVE -- Need more info, is there a file path listed?
LogitechDesktopMessenger -- Remove, just another update tool for Logitech devices.
msnmsgr --MSN Messenger - If you don't use remove. I even go and find msnmsgr.exe and rename it so it cant run (I hate MSN Messenger hehe)
Logitech Desk Messenger -- Nope don't need this
LimeWire On Startup -- Go ahead and remove. When you want to use this program just launch it yourself
LiesReal --Need more info, no listing for this file

There are a few listings up there that need to be removed, and some that I need more information on before I can say you should remove it.

I think most of your problem here is two fold. First of all you are using IE. I would highly suggest you move to FireFox for security reasons. Secondly it appears you have Norton Anti-Virus, not Norton Firewall. I'd suggest you go get zonealarm (free for home users) firewall and install it. Before you do this go ahead and make sure you don't have the Anti-Virus/Firewall Norton product as a bundled set. The best way I've found to protect my PC's is a layered defense.

Reby, I've added the command for the items you're not sure about. Hope that helps. I am thinking that the Popups are coming from that MSGPLUS. I was not getting those popups prior to my son upgrading to the new version of MSN.

Going to reboot now....I'll let you know. Once again I really appreciate your help. I have a 14 year old son who should not be seeing some of the popups.

This is interesting. I did the startup check, hoping to see some stuff that i can delete, but mine is all different. Lots and lots of stuff there, LOL!
