Reinstalled XP and no sound

<span style="color: #3333FF">I recently reinstalled XP and all of the drivers, including my sound card driver, but I have no sound. I've done everything I can think of so far:

all devices are installed working properly according to control panel
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the sound card and drivers
I've switched on, then back off, the motherboard sound device in BIOS
I get no error messages when playing audio CDs or mp3s or computer sounds


I know it's not the speakers because the computer is connected to the stereo and everything else works on the stereo. When I plug headphones in the headphones jack I still have no sound. Prior to reinstalling XP the sound worked fine.

Unplug the speaker shut down the computer and wait a little then restart it. after it reload, plug the speakers in and it should recognize it,and search for the driver.

My sound card is old, relatively. SoundBlaster Live. I've had this computer for a while. Relatively. I'm going to try again, though.</span>

<span style="color: #3333FF">Okay, maybe it's line out, not line in. Whatever the jacks are called at the back of the computer that you plug external speakers into.

The jack on the computer is the same one that I had the speakers that came with the computer plugged into.

The computer is plugged into the auxiliary jack on the stereo. </span>

Assuming you don't have the speaker muted in the volume control and you've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, and it doesn't work with head phones, I'd wager it is one of the following:

1) Wrong drivers. (most likely reason.)
2) Windows hardware wizard screwed it up. (This requires digging in the registry.)
3) Interrupt issue. (Try disabling extra network cards, modems, or anything else that isn't needed at that particular moment for testing.)
4) Wrong port.

Now about the speakers. Are these speakers regular amplified speakers? USB speakers? (which would work the way Dudd says) Or what are they hooked up to?

<span style="color: #3333FF">I don't think it's the wrong driver, I installed it from the Sound Blaster disk that came with the computer.

I don't know what to look for in the registry.

I'm not sure, but there did not seem to be an interrupt issue when I checked out the details in the control panel and properties. Admittedly, I don't know that I'm reading the info correctly. But there do not appear to be errors and the properties window says devices are working properly.

Not sure about the port. I'm familiar with LPT and COM ports.

The speakers aren't speakers. The computer is connected to the stereo system by a cord with a headphone-type plug on one end, plugged into the speaker jack at the back of the computer and RCA white and yellow plugs on the other end.

Know if the sound card built in the motherboard or separate?

When you reloaded windows, did the hardware wizard find it or were you able to cancel the wizard before loading the drivers? If you allowed windows to load up, the drivers may still be corrupted even though you used the original disk.

Unplug the line to the stereo from the back of the pc. Does the headphones work with the line unplugged?

What about the mute? Assume that isn't checked in the volume control section? All volume controls including the line out (if it exists) turned to max?

All happen is that when XP was checking the hardware it missed the speakers for some reason.
As aresult it did not load the driver for it.
And the solution is to unplug them and restart the computer then plug them in and the program will recognize them It does not matter if it is USB, RCA serial parallel,or however it is connected.
It doe not matter if the sound card is direct in the mother board, it plugged in.
It It use to function properly before the software was loaded, it have to be a software problem.

First of all, you never did tell what system you have? Always provide your system setup. The assumption is that you have a PC.

Second, NEVER jump to conclusion when troubleshooting a problem. Always verify the info with data, NOT your assumption or feelings.

Third, don't get defensive, answer the questions being asked, in trying to solve the problem. You only frustrate the people trying to help if you don't address the questions appropriately.

In other words, &quot;Help Us to Help You&quot;.

Please go back and re-check your settings in the BIOS.

You also need to check and make sure that the proper output (playback) ports are selected (such as, your WAVE control is not muted, and is turned up).

You seem to imply that you added an external sound card to your system, did you add one or not?

If Nylah does not mind me using her as a (good) example? Posters should go and read some of her post to understand the interaction that MUST take place between the helper and the victim...oops....I meant to say helpee.
