Thanks RichD...I think in the name of space I will forgo the surround idea. It was a nice thing but not all that necessary as frankly, I spend little time in the rooms. When I do though, I miss the stereo that died in winter.

I remember years ago a friend had some tiny Bose speakers, about 2 inches by 2 inches that were incredible! I couldn't believe the sound that came out of them. I wonder if they still make them? Off to visit Bose again...

those are good but overpriced IMO

i woudl suggest you go with Yamaha and a pair of these

It's not that confusing really, pretty much all there receiver/amps do surround sound now.
The jacks on the back are marked quite clear
front left
front right
center
rear left
rear right
subwoofer.

All yuh haffee duh now is mek sure yuh plug een de right speakah inna de right jack

I am not looking forward to hooking up all that so will probably just go with the simpler system and add dvd player, tv and a iPod thingie. To tell the truth, there were times when the speakers behind me were annoying, and it bothered me that I couldn't turn them down and keep the front ones on without getting up if I was doing something that needed more quiet.

All these surround systems have more than one volume control so you can turn down or up what's behind you or infront of you.

In my place I only use my two fron left and rights and a sub, and everything sounds awesome in my living room.

My Tv, sat receiver, dvd, are all hooked up through the stereo, even my laptop is hooked up wirelessly. I also have a remote which is usb and you can download the settings for any component you have so u just need the one remote.

Nanook, my 1990 Ken-wood receiver died last summer and I had been without music on my big speakers for MONTHS!
Last Saturday I went to the thrift store and spent $20 on a stereo receiver that must have been built in the 1960's


But it only cost me $20 and my house is ROCKIN once again!

I guess I just want something that I can play cd's on and listen to the radio. Surround sound would be fine as long as I can get it hooked up right this time.

I was looking at Bose because the sound was phenomenal but so was the price tag. Plus, I couldn't really tell what all came with it.

I guess if the speakers somehow connect to the tv, I wouldn't be mad about it but it's not a requirement.

The one I had was pretty old. A 5.1 I guess you would call it. It was a monster sized thing and all the speakers were controlled together.

Bandanna, I have 2 of those bookshelf stereo's (also getting old). One is in my shop and the other in my bedroom, which is fine enough for there, but I do miss the sound hook up to TV, and yes, I would like to be able to hook up internet radio and all kinds of fun things. I have been workign hard and want to treat myself to a nice present.

dahJah, if you have a moment, can you tell more about wireless internet hook up? I would love that since I listen to internet radio sometimes. (yet I can never figure out how to make my way to Positive Journey, too many roadblocks for my brain)..

Monday I have to go out and about so will try to make a point to stop in a couple places and hear/see some systems, but so far I am liking the price and the Yamaha receiver and the speaker set Rich posted. I am still not sure I need speakers though, I have the set from the now defunct Pioneer unit.

next dumb question...can I hook up a new two speaker set and my original sub woofer to the new unit?

Yes you can hook up any new set a speakers and sub to the new unit.

There are different ways of doing this. Some of the receiver/amps come with wifi on board and that may be the easiest way to do it. That is the way I'd go if I was to do it again (at the time though those were damn expensive)
I bought an airport express then I went online and got Airfoil it was bout $25. It will hijack any audio from your computer and send it to the airport which is plugged into your amp (mine is in the AUX jack).

So my laptop can be upstairs or out on the deck and I can send music to the stereo.
