HELP HELP I Crashed!

Somehow I was able to crawl here for help. My computer crashed yesterday and I can't make it fix. I try to let the disk check run but it stops at 68% and sits there, no matter how long I leave it.

The system has recovered from a serious error
Then a bunch of numbers when I click on that..

Another message window

Explorer.EXE Corrupt File

The file or directory \WINDOWS\Help\starter\sacvsm.ini2 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run check disk utility

This all happened after the power was knocked off.

So is the disk check utility the thing that keeps trying to run when I start my machine? If so, how can I coax it to run past 68%?

Boot into safe mode and run it from there, or use a windows OS configured boot disk to do it.

can you say that again in a way I can understand? Where is safe mode? What is OS configured boot disk? Will it erase my pictures?

How to Remove a Virus (or Any Other Malware)

It's not that bad..If you suspect you have a virus (or any other malware), you should take steps immediately. The following procedures work for most viruses or malware (except perhaps for completely new, unknown or unusually malignant strains). It is better to complete all steps, so you can be (reasonably) sure that all traces have been removed.
Signs to look out for (infections may cause one or several of the following):

Slow computer, and/or slow internet connection.
Strange pop-ups or web browser redirections (beyond those expected from dodgy websites).
Program failure, or inexplicable errors (even after a fresh install).
System functions unavailable (eg: Control Panel, Task Manager, Internet Explorer).
Steps
Confirmation and Preliminary Action:
Make a list of ways your computer is showing signs of abnormal operation. Satisfy yourself that these signs are not due to hardware failure or problems with attached equipment. Sometimes people misdiagnose software problems (such as bugs in Outlook Express or printer drivers) as virus activity.
Run your virus-scanner, but beware, many modern viruses can circumvent (or hide from) common anti-virus programs. Norton Antivirus and Mcafee have both been seen to exhibit this weakness, or seem unable to remove certain strains.
Check access to System Restore & the Internet.
Check computer for system access - Try to disable System Restore - right-click My Computer and select properties. Turn off System Restore on all drives.
Download and install new Anti-Virus. Both AVG Free Edition and Avast! are well thought of programs. Install one of them (see External Links). Update the program's virus definitions. Don't scan for viruses yet.
Install Spybot Search & Destroy (see External Links), and update its definitions. Don't scan for malware yet.
Install Adaware Personal Edition (see External Links) and update its definitions. Don't scan for malware yet.
Reboot into Safe Mode - Restart your computer and press F8 before Windows loads. Press F8 several times if you need to. Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu. Safe Mode disables much of the startup routine (including some common Malware hiding places).
Run your Anti-Virus - Run the freshly installed Anti-Virus. And Heal or Delete any references to Malware.
Run your Malware Scanners - Run both the scanners sequentially, deleting any references found.
Reboot and turn System Restore back on.

Bandanna, explained part of your question, so I will finish the rest. No the process will not erase your pictures. If you have Win-XP, NTFS file system you can NOT boot with a FAT file system boot-disk (which is the usual method). You will have to boot with a special Win-XP, NTFS configured boot-disk/CD in order to see or access the NTFS drives and files. Sometimes for very bad reasons, you can NOT boot to safe-mode and must go with this method.

OK thanks J Kid & Bandanna, I'm working on Bandi's list, downloading a virus protection right now but I don't know how a virus could get in here I never ever open an attachement.

J Kid about this disk you are talking about, now I'm confused.
I've got 3 disks here:

Operating system: Reinstallation CD Windows XP home edition

Application Backupell Installed programs

Drivers & utilities: for reinstalling service drivers and using diagnostics, utilities and online documentation

Is one of these what you're talking about?

None of those disks you mentioned. You should have had one made when your PC was healthy. You could borrow one from somebody else.

I remember seeing NTFS on the startup where it wants to run a disk check. But the disk check won't go past 68% then just sits there finished.

Hi J Kid, I don't remember seeing the word LOCKED, but after trying all morning to get Norton downloaded I finally get to the install and it won't install.

I keep getting little warnings abot things being corrupt. Windoes, Firefox, and something that starts with an A.

I can stay working as long as I don't let the machine idle at all, once I leave it, it freezes up and then the only way to shut it down is the button.
So far I moved my screensaver to an hour and that helped.

I know PC problems can be sooo frustrating...

When I was having all those kinds of errors, I just re-formated the hard drive, and re-installed windows...

It's a pain, and you have to re-install everything [img]/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]

But it worked, and the error messages stoped!! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/bannana_purple.gif[/img]

You will loose everything you don't save... the good news is you will have a fresh clean PC with nothing but Windows installed when you are done...

Do you have your windows disc??
