Are you talking the power light or the hard drive light?
The power light should be on constant after the switch is pressed.
If it is the power light, then that is not good, you may have a bad power internal supply. I want you to pull out the battery and see if you can power it up then.
If you are having hard drive issues, then you could get the symptoms you described above with the HD light.
