Phone Question Again!

I know this topic has been discussed ad nauseum on here but me and the search engine on this site are not friends.

I want to purchase as phone for use while in JA.

My roaming fees are $3.49/minute so unless someone is dying I'd rather not use my regular cell phone for small chit chat.

<span style="font-weight: bold">So, in MoBay where is a good place to buy a basic phone for use in JA? What kind of prices are we looking at?</span>

if your current Cdn phone is with Rogers you can just buy a digicell chip with the Intl long distance plan.

My service provider is with Bell though. I just spoke with them and they didnt offer any such option Just that I have roaming options.

I've never fiddled with the chip business, so slightly stupid question....I could take my phone with me and see if a Digicel chip would fit inside?

if your phone is unlocked, you might be able to switch out the sim cards....

otherwise, you can buy a Digicel handset with a sim card and maybe $100Ja worth of talk time for about $40US...you might even get a gift with it (eg: beach towel, t-shirt, etc....)

thanks Dave, I was just looking at their website as well to sort things out.

I only understand the unlock/lock sim card stuff in theory because I have heard other ppl talk about it. But I honestly dont follow it well.

How could I check if my phone is unlocked? Would I need to call my provider to find that out?

yeah, check with your provider...if it's locked, they <span style="text-decoration: underline">may</span> be able to give you an unlock code...

my experience has been that most phones sold in the US are locked....

So Bell sent me the code to unlock my phone.

But in the next breath they say that my Smartphone doesnt support SIM technology? What that mean? If it doesnt have a SIM card what does it use?

And if there is no SIM technology in the phone then what does the code they have given me unlock?
