So, just to close out this story...

I wake up next morning to the sound of a rooster, up in this beautiful Hanover countryside. The likkle household is a flurry of activity, everyone making beds and sweeping and making breakfast and getting ready for their day. Their house is crowded and modest but it is clean and neat and full of love. I go outside and wait for the taximan who will bring me back to Negril, as the sun rises and the day grows warm. Flowers, butterflies, birds - it is so lush and beautiful. A carpenter walks by on his way to work, stops and notices the fence around the house is broken, fixes it, and walks on. I ponder how different life is up here - slower, more relaxed, and with more of a sense of community. Back home it is always rush-rush, busy with errands and to-do lists, never time to just sit like I am doing now.

The taximan comes, I say goodbye to my African Princess and to the pickneys in da house, and head back to Negril...

... It is a few days later, and almost time to head home. I have spent a couple more nights in the bed of my African Princess in the countryside, but as yet nothing has happened. Not comfortable initiating romance in a little house full of pickneys, and anyway I've been trained that I need to take a woman out on at least one proper date first. And so, on my last evening in Jamaica, I invite her to a real date. First, dinner up at Rick's Cafe. With wine, and a romantic sunset. Then, back to my hotel room. Some nice music, mood lighting, the gentle hum of the air conditioner. The scene is set, finally, for a proper seduction.

Things are proceeding nicely. Then, &quot;Wait. I need to ask you something&quot; she says. &quot;OK. What?&quot; I reply. &quot;Will you buy me a house?&quot;. What? Somehow I am reminded of that old Meatloaf song Paradise by the Dashboard Light http://www.lyricsfreak.com/m/meat+lo..._20091297.html , the part where it goes &quot;Stop right there! I gotta know right now...&quot;. So I reply, &quot;Buy you a house?&quot;. She says &quot;Don't worry, it's not like where you're from, you can buy a modest house here for like 10,000 US&quot;. I am feeling a bit, um, frustrated at this point... the rocket's ready to launch, so to speak. &quot;Do we have to talk about this now?&quot; I ask. &quot;Yes. Otherwise I won't continue&quot; she says. Annoyed, I point out &quot;Look, I can walk down the beach there and find a girl who will do this for $50&quot;. &quot;I am not a cheap ho!&quot; she exclaims. &quot;True... You are not cheap!&quot; I reply. Then I say &quot;Sorry, no, I can't promise that&quot;. And after a while she says &quot;OK, you don't have to buy me a house&quot;. But by then, the mood is gone, and eventually we just go to sleep.

The next day I go home. Nothing ever develops with the African Princess, and eventually she moves away and I lose touch with her. But I keep returning to Jamaica, and each time I do, I keep returning to that house in the country as a guest of my friend the hotel housekeeper. And over the years, I develop a relationship with her kids like a father (the biological father being absent). And so, a love developed from that visit to the countryside, albeit of a different variety than what I had first imagined...

Just posting a story from my long-ago past. When I posted that, I was on my way to Jamaica to visit my adopted pickneys (nearly grown now) that I love like dey mi own children. And I was reminiscing and posting a story from long ago when I first met them (in the story they were the toddlers chasing the chickens under the house).

Geez, tough crowd.
